CM: Conte has ‘mad desire’ for Italy return – Milan unsure despite Zlatan’s endorsement

By Oliver Fisher -

Antonio Conte wants to return to Italy, and there are two clubs above all that would seem to be a good fit given that they have imminent upcoming vacancies.

According to Calciomercato.com, it is almost time to answer the question ‘where will Conte coach next season?’. The former head coach of Inter and Juventus, who has been without a team after his farewell to Tottenham at the end of March 2023, has a ‘mad desire’ to get back to work.

He can’t wait to embrace a new project as per the report, but only if it is truly ambitious. The Italian will choose the club where the objectives are clear from day one, where he can fight to win trophies straight away.

He will say yes to a president who can satisfy him, not only from a personal point of view when it comes to his salary, but this does not mean that he will necessarily ask for a lot of investment in the summer mercato.

Conte starts from a certainty: he wants to return to work in Italy, in Serie A, where the firepower in terms of finances is decidedly limited compared to England. For that reason, it seems impossible he will get anywhere close to the €17m per year he received at Spurs.

Despite Italy having a more limited economic outlook, this does not necessarily mean lower ambitions in the eyes of Conte. He was a part of the Juventus’ rebirth, and he would be happy to do the same at Milan and Napoli, the only credible options at the moment.

At the moment no possibility should be excluded a priori, but the Rossoneri are the most complicated idea. Conte is the one who is endorsed by a large and vocal section of the fan base, who consider him the only one capable of rebuilding on what is left by Pioli.

He has another man on his side too, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but RedBird Capital have other technical and economic ideas. For now they are aiming for a less expensive profile, who knows how to work with young players and knows how to develop them.

In short, for Milan he is not a first choice, while for Napoli he is the first name on the list. He has already had several calls with De Laurentiis, yet much will depend on how the Azzurri finish the season and what type of mercato he has in mind.

  1. It will end very badly if Conte goes to Napoli, it won’t be good too if he goes to Milan, but it will be bloodier in Napoli…

  2. I imagine De Laurentis waits for Pioli, he seems a good fit for them if he leaves.

Anyway, hopefully Conte finds his place somewhere else. Call me stupid but I prefer to spend 100 hours a year of gameplay time looking at more attractive football, be it at the cost of not winning the title in Italy (which of course is far from granted anyways).

      1. The name suggests it anyway :). Don’t understand me wrong, I would love to win each and every title possible, but apart from my love for the club I consider my personal time prescious as well. If Conte is the way to go, I would be surprised if the play excites me, but we wait and see… I still think they are going to look at someone else, more close to the current style of play and formations. Not because it’s better but because it’s more cost efficient.

  3. The problem with Conte is that he is turning into a version of Mourinho. He comes in happy, wins something and starting year 2 he complains about everything only to leave year 3-4 with the club in worse shape. He is a winner for sure, but other than his first Juve stint, he has not lasted long at any job and always ends up badly

  4. Conte is my #2 choice after Motta. He isn’t a long term option but the structure and mentality he would bring in would stay long after he’s gone.

    1. And what about all of the players we’d have to change for him, and then change again once he is gone? Or will we be committed to 3-5-2 for the next decade regardless of manager, like Juventus?
