Furlani hits back at ‘Moneyball’ branding and says there is ‘harmony’ at Milan

By Isak Möller -

Ahead of the game between AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, the Rossoneri’s CEO Giorgio Furlani spoke to the media about the start of the season, the new stadium, and the club’s new approach.

Furlani and his team took over the responsibilities of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara this summer, making a total of ten signings. So far, it has been a success as Milan have 18 points out of 21 in the league, joint-first with Inter.

Speaking to Prime, as cited by MianNews, Furlani shared his thoughts on the start of the season. He also explained that ‘Moneyball’ isn’t some kind of magical formula; instead it’s thorough work with a dedicated team.

On the start of the season…

“We’ve been working well since the summer, there’s harmony. Things have gone well for now, then we’ll see in June. We’re here to play for it.”

Can we already make an initial assessment of your work?

“I have been involved in the project for 5 years, more closely in the last year. Using the word Moneyball as a magic formula isn’t correct, we work together with the people at Casa Milan. There is no secret algorithm that spits out magical solutions… It’s not correct to say that.”

How is the stadium issue?

“We’ve been trying to build a new stadium for five years. We can’t be competitive without a modern stadium. Now we have a new project in San Donato. Timeframe? Five years from now to play the first match in the new stadium [2028].”

Milan will be looking to claim all three points tonight as they only managed a draw against Newcastle in the opener. In short, the game is rather crucial for the Rossoneri and it remains to be seen how they will respond.
