Mayor confirms San Donato are ‘working seriously’ on program agreement for Milan stadium

The Mayor of San Donato has suggested that AC Milan still wish to continue with the idea of building a new stadium in the area, at least as far as he is aware.

Today’s big development was that Milan and Inter – as Mayor Beppe Sala confirmed – have now said no to WeBuild’s plan to renovate San Siro which was presented recently. They pitched a €400m project to bring the stadium up to speed, but the clubs believe it is unrealistic from a cost perspective.

However, as part of his speech after a meeting with the leadership of both clubs, Sala confirmed that Milan and Inter are now keen on re-exploring the idea of building a new stadium in the San Siro area near the current one, something that was first put officially put forward five years ago.

Nonetheless, MilanNews reported this evening that the idea of building in San Donato remains the ‘only path’ for the Rossoneri at present, especially given the work already done, but Inter could be invited to join to split the costs.

The same source contacted the mayor of San Donato, Francesco Squeri, for a comment on the news that has emerged today after the meeting at the City Hall.

How are things progressing?

“There is a Program Agreement and it is moving forward according to the lawful times. We cannot say anything about what happens outside of this agreement, these are choices that the clubs will have to make,” he said.

“We as an administration are moving forward, there have been meetings and we are continuing. For the rest, they do not communicate the strategies of the clubs to me.”

Why is San Donato still the best solution?

“I say that Milan can develop a project that is more visible also from the point of view of advertising, because we are at kilometre zero from the Autostrada del Sole and the high-speed line passes through. At a strategic level, San Donato is certainly important.

“As mentioned, the program agreement has started, we are working seriously and collaborating well. Obviously, since it involves the clubs’ money, they will decide what the best solution will be. And we will take note of it.”

  1. Build it and own it ourselves.
Then charge Inter rent for 2 – 3 years while they renovate San Siro unimpeded by fixtures.

    Job done!
Oh wait. This is Italy. Nothing is simple.
