Milan international report: Maignan mistake for France; Reijnders stands out

By Isak Möller -

A total of seven AC Milan players were in international action last night and all of them featured on the pitch. Just one stood out, while the others certainly could have done better.

The players in question are the following: Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez, Olivier Giroud and Tijjani Reijnders (France 2-1 Netherlands); Fikayo Tomori (England 1-0 Australia); Rafael Leao (Portugal 3-2 Slovakia); Samuel Chukwueze (Saudi Arabia 2-2 Nigeria).

The main standout was Reijnders, who played the entire game for his side and moved all over the pitch, also looking secure in the passing (86%). Along with the goalscorer Hartman, he was the best on the pitch. It’s worth noting he played as a No.10.

The others, based on the ratings from various outlets, didn’t have as much success. Tomori had to cover a lot of ground on the right due to Alexander-Arnold, which he’s normally used to, but he struggled a bit this time out.

Maignan, meanwhile, made a big mistake on the goal (losing the near post completely) but at least he made a couple of good stops as well. Hernandez didn’t have much of an impact on the game, struggling in both phases. Giroud came off the bench, but didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.

Chukwueze dared to take on his man a lot but lost possession a whopping 13 times (!) and that’s simply not good enough. Finally, Leao was involved in the build-up to the penalty but didn’t do much more than that.

  1. What? Isak you are again making stuff up, how can you falsify random things like that? Reijnders was the worse rated player in the Dutch team by most. And if not the worse one of the worst in all. Where did he shine? Did you watch the game? He did almost nothing, played as AMC – 0 key passes, a lot of lost possession, 0 shots. I really don’t understand how can you write what you wrote.

    1. “It’s worth noting he played as a No.10, creating chances above all.” How many chances did he create with 0 key passes, can you let us know? A number would be great. This is ridiculous, you’re a fanboy of Reijnders. 😂

      1. Sometimes, maybe more than half the time it’s nice being the only one who knows the truth and still not be an outspoken smart Alec about it.

      1. It is ridiculous, you are all obsessed with forward runs and passes that end up with nothing. You had a whole article about that with passes into the final third like it really matters that much. He did not create 2 chances in the whole game. The France midfield owned their midfield. It wasn’t his fault, the whole team was bad, but you can’t say he shined. Not true.

      2. I saw the the first half, and indeed Reijnders was one of the best (most involved) from the home side without making many mistakes.

        1. The descriptions why he was good sound like bad excuses. I’m waiting for “He ran a lot” “He passed the ball” and of course “He was in the first team”.

Btw. Everyone can watch the full game here and see for themselves.

          1. Well it seems like you’re in the minority opinion, after a quick google every ratings I found had reijnders as middle of the pack to good. Mostly 6s but a few 7s. Are you making stuff up?

  2. Being French, I have to say that I was nervous about Reijnders. He was everywhere, constantly creating and taking back possession.

  3. I am seeing that reijnders first time makes him struggle just like leao I also think chukwueze struggles a little bit to but pulisic have played for dortmund and Chelsea I think that’s why Milan put him ahead of chukwueze but in the future I think these players will raise so much and reijnders will be a good key

  4. Come on guys. Are we only posting Reinjders possession accuracy when he gets more than 85% or something? because overall on the season it’s lower. Pick out the one stat where he sort of does well and then run with it 🤷‍♂️
Now he did have a couple of passes where Veghorst should have done better on in the first half but otherwise he was quite anonymous. France did control proceedings for the most part. And Deers was playing a sort of RW, CAM roaming role. He was all over the place but I didn’t see the effectiveness of the tactic tbh. That worked when he was at AZ. He’s now playing big boy football.
