Montella: “I keep this performance in high regard”

By Alex Viola -

Milan manager Vincenzo Montella spoke to Premium Sport following his team’s sixth defeat in six matches against teams currently in the top six places in Serie A – tonight the defeat came to league leaders Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo.

“I keep this performance in high regard. The team demonstrated great personality. We’ve been growing steadily. The defeat tonight hurts because maybe we deserved something more from the match.”

Yet again, Milan frustrated in the final third when closing in on the oppositions goal.

“We have to improve in the final third.”

“I’m happy for the performance tonight, but angry for losing after playing in the way we did”

Montella was asked about Milan losing to all of the big teams:

“Our last two defeats have come against Juventus and Napoli, who are both ahead of us. At times, the matches have been even on the pitch. It takes time in order to reach their levels: it’s a path we must follow.”

“I’m convinced that we are improving.”

“The results haven’t been coming and it makes the standings difficult to look at, but now we are going to need to win matches to achieve our objectives.”

The ex-Roma hitman was asked what needs to happen to improve I rossoneri:

“It is difficult to play every three days because we do not have time to train, but this mustn’t be an alibi. We need imminent results and must work on everything. Following this match today, we need to improve in the future and be more concentrated and have more in the head.”

Vincenzo Montella was criticized for playing Borini in a position in which he’d have to contain Lorenzo Insigne.

“We need to improve in the interpretation of the various phases of the match. I wanted to make it difficult on the wings for Napoli, with Borini, so he could give more freedom to Suso.”

“To defend against Napoli, you must keep possession as much as possible. Defensively, we were always at risk with a back 3, but a back 5 would’ve been too cautious. Overall, I feel Borini has done well given his characteristics.”

“I’m optimistic because the team is growing. We have to overcome this difficult time and then I’m confident we can finish in the top 4 places.”
