Report: Atalanta ask to use San Siro for Champions League games

By Oliver Fisher -

Atalanta could ask to play their Champions League home games at San Siro next season, according to a report.

The Bergamo-based club only qualified for the top four ahead of Milan in the final game of last season as they beat Sassuolo.

They will play in Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in their history after they eventually finished third, however they are struggling to find a venue to play those games in.

Their current home – the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia, soon to be the Gewiss Arena – is undergoing major work and will not be ready in time for the new campaign.

Atalanta have in the past played their Europa League home fixtures at Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia, and that seemed to be the most likely hosting place for their Champions League ties too.

However, Radio Dea claim that Atalanta have enquired about the possibility of playing those fixtures at San Siro instead, something which has understandably been met by a mixed response from the Milan fanbase.

Only Inter will use San Siro in midweek next season as it stands (Coppa Italia games aside), as the Rossoneri were excluded from the Europa League.
