GdS: Shape of new ‘Cathedral stadium’ changes as rendering emerges – photo

There has been an interesting development regarding AC Milan and Inter’s plan to build a new stadium as it seems the existing ‘Cathedral’ design from Populous will be altered.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato.com) reports that Milan and Inter are moving full steam ahead to build a stadium with a capacity of 60-65,000 that is about 30 metres high with two tiers and to option it in time for the 2027-28 season.

San Siro will be demolished at a cost of €50m and replaced in 2030 by a three-storey tower with shopping center, offices, a large green area and the citadel dedicated to grassroots sports.

The project remains that of Populous, but the ‘Cathedral’ is now expected to have a different shape than the one unveiled three years ago. The paper states that it is no longer square – therefore without the features that drew inspiration from the Duomo and with the glass of the facade in the style of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – but will instead be oval.

This is to comply with the binding requests on the reduction of volumes and on the increase of public green spaces (an urban park of 10 hectares) by the Council of Milan.

It must also be mentioned that when Milan president Paolo Scaroni and Inter CEO Alessandro Antonello spoke at their press conference yesterday, they had behind them a design that looked different to the Cathedral.

  1. The Design on the photo above the article is awesome! The design on twitter link is horrible and obsolete 🙁 Why would anyone build a NEW stadium in 2030 that looks like stadiums from 1970’s is beyond my imagination!?

  2. That’s a shame. The original Cathedral design was truly one of a kind – majestic looking. This new concept (most likely at much less cost) looks like most other stadiums….oh well. Sad, but as long as we get a new fkn stadium this decade I will be happy

  3. Either its a messed up rendering or a clickbait. No way this average piece of metal is gonna be the actual stadium replacing the iconic and historic San Siro.
