Tuttosport: Why Milan and Inter are now considering buying San Siro for €100m

Another report has now claimed that AC Milan and Inter are considering buying San Siro from the City Council as part of the renovation project.

As Tuttosport (via Calcio e Finanza) reports this morning, he final decision by Inter and Milan on the future of the San Siro stadium will arrive in a few days, with direct consequences on the projects in Rozzano and San Donato.

The second week of September has been chosen for the meeting between the clubs and the Council, where the response regarding the project proposed by Webuild will be discussed. The date in question could be Friday the 13th.

The two teams are carefully examining the possibility of purchasing San Siro, an aspect that seems to be even more relevant than the analysis of the modernisation works. It is no coincidence that the mayor Giuseppe Sala insisted on this point, with the clubs needing access to the extra revenues.

During the summer, several works were carried out at San Siro, something that had not happened for a long time. It can be interpreted as a signal of the possible desire of the clubs to remain at the historic venue, but it could also be seen as a necessity due to a long period of inactivity.

In essence, even if new stadiums were built by one or both clubs, they would have to continue playing at San Siro for at least another four years because of how how long the construction process would take.

There is the hypothesis of San Siro hosting the 2027 Champions League final but there has been no decision, which is linked to the uncertainty about the availability of the stadium, a necessary condition for UEFA.

Despite this, the Council have not yet responded to the request for clarification sent by the FIGC but should do so next week, at which time the clubs’ final decision will also be known. Inter and Milan reiterate that nothing has been decided yet and continue to move forward with the projects in Rozzano and San Donato.

In particular, Milan are keen to emphasise that they have already invested a lot to buy the land in the south of the city. Even still, the fact remains that – after more than five years of work towards a new stadium (the first presentation dates back to 2019) – no concrete progress has yet been made.

For this reason, Mayor Sala’s proposal could prove interesting, as it involves the transfer of ownership of San Siro to the clubs, a necessary move to increase the revenues and value of the clubs. This is a crucial aspect for the two owners, represented by financial funds that aim for a future profitable resale.

The cost of the operation? In recent weeks, Mayor Sala announced that the Revenue Agency will evaluate San Siro and the areas around the stadium, which clubs always look at with great interest. In recent months, some rumours confirmed by the mayor himself valued the Meazza at around €100m.

That is an estimate that is destined to grow if Inter and Milan decide to become owners of some surrounding areas as well. Obviously, however, each expense would be divided by two.

  1. Buy it.. Demolish it.. Build a new version that resembles the old architectural style, but with modern facility.
People were understandably emotional when Wembley got demolished. But if it’s done right, a good balance between old and new can be struck.
I always thought that was the right solution.
But I still don’t trust the municipality. And I also think that’s how both club’s feel.
    That’s the problem.

    1. The issue would be to relocate Milan and Inter for their home games for at least a few years if San Siro is demolished and rebuilt. There is Bergamo and Monza close to the city but it would be a logistical nightmare. Wembley doesn’t host football clubs.

The renovations are meant to upgrade the stadium with modern facilities and the luxury suits that come with every new stadium. I would celebrate if San Siro is saved!

    2. The problem is that Milan needs a big stadium, we can’t just relocate to a 30000-40000 seater stadium + Wembley didn’t host club games

  2. I’m not sure I believe this, not within the context of RedBird (or any private fund) ownership. A large part of buying Milan (as is the case with any major club takeover) was about expanding a real estate portfolio.

You can’t build a “Milan entertainment experience” on land half owned by Inter.

Dunno. I’d love too still be going to San Siro in 10 years time but I can’t see it.

  3. Might as well merge inter and Milan back together if we’re that desperate.
Co owning a stadium. That’s the most ridiculous thing I heard when it comes to stadiums…

    1. The New York Giants and the New York Jets share their stadium, one of the very few NFL stadiums built with private fundings, and they make a lot of profits from home games and side events. Also the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, albeit the Chargers pay a rent as it’s owned by the Rams.

Milan would keep its profits for home games and likewise for Inter while they share renovation costs. I don’t think they would earn a lot from third party events if there are three different stadiums in Milan able to host such events.

      1. American Football teams play how many games on their own pitch a season? 8?
Double that and it’s just 16 games.

You can’t be sharing the pitch between two teams who play close to 50 or 60 games each.
50-60 games a season on the same pitch would destroy it, and require it to be re-turfed way more than it should, which costs a shit ton in maintenance fees, and still leaves the pitch messed up.

Either kick one of the teams out, or move. Can’t be sharing stadiums here in Europe if you’re a big team.

    2. Why is it ridiculous? Milan and Inter have shared the San Siro for decades amicably, and co-owning it wouldn’t be much different.
The Maths makes sense, an Iconic stadium is saved and renovated for half the price.
Bayern share the Allianz stadium with great ease.

      1. Just the fact they been sharing it for decades is ridiculous.
Wonder why real and patetiko don’t share one..or spurs and arsenal. Or l’pool and Everton. I could go on but I know I’m barking up the wrong tree..
