Vincenzo Montella: Formation, targets and tactics

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan announced yesterday night that Montella has been appointed as their manager for the next two seasons.

The Italian tactician’s style of play is very close to Berlusconi’s idea of football and the former Fiorentina and Sampdoria boss could pick the 4-3-1-2 system which is the favourite of the demanding rossoneri owner.

Montella’s football is based on ball possession, that’s why he will need quality players in the middle of the pitch and the number one target for the role of playmaker is Leandro Paredes. The former Empoli star was one of the most impressing midfielders last season and AS Roma might be open to sell him in the summer, though Sampdoria are also interested in signing him.

Franco Vazquez is the name for the role of trequartista, the offensive midfielder who will be playing behind the two strikers, even if Montella has never deployed a 4-3-1-2 system throughout his career.

Romagnoli and Zapata will be playing in the middle of the rossoneri’s defence, but with Alex and Mexes who have not been offered a contract extension, Montella will need a back-up to the defensive duo.

Fiorentina’s Nenad Tomovic is tops the Italian manager’s wish-list. The player and the manager share the same agent: Alessandro Lucci and this detail could be very helpful for the club should they decide to bring the defender to the San Siro.
