A Bola: Leao and Lille to pay €19m to Sporting – why it could unlock Milan renewal

By Isak Möller -

The financial dispute that Rafael Leao has had with Sporting Lisbon since he left the club seems to be coming to an end. And this could be good news for AC Milan, who are working on renewing their star winger.

Back in 2018, Leao terminated his contract with Sporting Lisbon on the grounds of just cause. It has since been determined that it was terminated unlawfully, upsetting the Portuguese side since they lost out on a lot of money.

Leao was initially ordered to pay €16.5m but as reported by A Bola this morning, the figure had risen to over €20m with interest and other costs. Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent, has been working hard and an agreement has been reached at €19m.

It should be noted that Leao doesn’t have to pay all of this himself, as CAS determined that Lille are responsible as well. The €19m will be split 50-50 (€9.5m each) between the two parties, therefore, and a conclusion to this could benefit Milan.

Talks have been ongoing for a renewal for quite some time and Leao will now have peace of mind to sit down with the Rossoneri management. He’s in for a significant pay rise, as well.
