AC Milan 0-0 Juventus: Five things we learned – Allegri ball and Leao’s improvement

AC Milan vs Juventus is always a highly anticipated game in Italy and this time it was no different with both teams fighting for a Champions League spot.

The game was quite balanced, with both teams having chances and possession of the ball was mostly even. Yet, it felt like Milan had a little bit more to offer when it came to creating a chance in front of goal.

Unfortunately for the Rossoneri, they didn’t make the most of their chances, but the defensive solidity at the back prevented Juventus from striking too.

That being said, the Bianconeri also did well in defence. They were quite structured and, excluding a few moments, didn’t allow their opponents much space.

In the end it’s definitely the Diavolo that benefit more from the draw that and here are five things we observed during the game.

1. Much better from Leao but not nearly enough

Rafael Leao was very active this time around and was much more involved in the game. He had a few decent runs and nearly got an assist for Alexis Saelemaekers, who was unfortunate to hit the crossbar.

Whilst it seemed like Leao was more keen to get on the ball and make something happen, it is also fair to say that half of the time he lost the ball too easily and did nothing productive.

It may be better compared to his recent displays, but it is far from the best he can do on the pitch. A nice start and a strong finish to the season might come in handy with the Rossoneri seeking to secure a Champions League return.

2. Saelemaekers shines

The Belgian has had a rather mixed season, like most of his teammates if we are being honest. Against Juventus, though, he seemed up for the challenge as he got on the ball quite often and combined with his teammates really well.

He also won the ball back on numerous occasions with good positioning and smart tackles.

In the end he was unfortunate to not score as he hit the crossbar. Nevertheless, it was a MOTM worthy performance in the end as he continues to showcase his strengths in both phases of the game – ideal for that wing-back position.

3. Mixed bag in the middle

In the middle of the park it was yet again Luka Modric who dictated the tempo and managed to escape the Juventus press with ease. The Croatian made some good runs and backed it up with his usual solid passing, but sadly for him he will now miss the rest of the season, following a knock. He will definitely be missed in the final four games of the season.

There’s also the case of whether or not he will renew with Milan for another year. Hopefully he does since this being his last game in red and black just does not seem right.

Adrien Rabiot, on the other hand, was a bit more tame this time around. He did force a save from Di Gregorio but apart from that, it was a decent display – nothing impressive but no mistakes made either.

And lastly we have Youssouf Fofana, who again was a let down in the final third. He missed an opportunity to make the most out of a pretty decent chance in the first half and he also seemed unable to combine with his teammates.

While the overall display wasn’t that bad it just was not on the level of Rabiot and Modric.

4. Defensive trio does the job

Juventus have been solid in the attacking phases this season, even when struggling at the back so it was never going to be an easy game for the back three. But they did quite alright, as seen with the clean sheet.

Fikayo Tomori, in particular, did great against Boga, who can be really dangerous when given space to dribble. Yet, the Englishman dealt with him quite well.

In the middle, Matteo Gabbia was also solid and although David wasn’t that active, we mustn’t underestimate the role the Italian played in that to be the case.

Strahinja Pavlovic was also solid on the left, as he had a little more to deal with, given that Davide Bartesaghi struggled in the first half against Conceicao. However, the Serbian managed to help his teammate and essentially neutralise the Juventus attack.

A typical defensive display by a Allegri side.

5. Allegri does well in a delicate moment

I think it’s fair to say that in the reverse fixture, Milan should’ve been braver when it came to putting more energy into the attacking phase of the game and that 0-0 was frustrating, as it seemed that the Rossoneri just didn’t want the win enough.

This time around, with five games to go, Massimiliano Allegri’s team actually were more direct than their opponents but balanced it off well at the back. They had to avoid defeat purely because Juventus are a direct competitor for the top four and at this stage of the season, with no title to play for, a draw was not that bad of a result.

The coach organised his side well at the back and up front, the Diavolo had more than enough chances to score but were not clinical enough. Even so, it was a solid display in both phases of the game with the substitutions also helping out and Allegri has to get some of the praise.

His team now sits in third place, six points in front off fifth place Como and sixth place Roma with four games to go.

  1. Well I for one found Allegri’s 9-0-1 formation refreshing. Every player knew his exact role. And Leao knew he didn’t have to track back on defense.

    1. One chance to score is an improvement. I’m not as worried about Pulisic. If Allegri ever lets him get in 20 yards of the goal he just might score. See his heat map for the game.

  2. 1- If someone has insomnia problems, watching that game probably helped it.
2- Jashari and Ricci should look at what they want to be and what they want to achieve with Milan. With Modrić out for the remaining of the season, this is their time to shine.
3- Saelemakers “shines” but can’t aim right when needed.
4-“Defensive trio does the job” AND Maignan who also saved ou a$$es here.
5-Pulišić’s case is becoming more and more worrisome.
Side note: last wednesday, José Bordalás’s Getafe beat Real Sociedad 1-0 without having a single shot on target and something like 0.13 xG, no big chances, 34% possession,… Allegri must be salivating at the idea that such a feat is actually possible.

  3. 5. It definitely sucks but I’m not too worried. He’s proven quality. The problem is he needs a natural 9 up top to play off of if Allegri sticks with this formation. He did miss a few good chances but his drop in form started when he and Leao started playing together up top. Doesn’t work. In a perfect scenario they keep both and go back to 3 up top and play them on their respective wings.

    1. “but his drop in form started when he and Leao started playing together up top”……..That means Leao was holding is legs………good riddance

      1. Anyone who fails to connect the dots on Pulisic’s drop of form and becoming the striker pair of Leao is absolutely clueless or blind. Or both.

And I can say the exact same thing about Leao’s form and Pulisic-partnership. (That should keep the “BUT HE’S A LEAO-HATER!!!!” comments away from this discussion. Should, but probably won’t.).

  4. I didn’t know there was still anything to take away from the game…

Waiting for end of season to really know what the plan is. Because, I can’t bear to watch this kind of Milan next season.

  5. Credo che con due attaccanti di peso il Milan avrebbe detto la sua in campionato nonostante qualche errorino fatto da Allegri, fidandosi sempre degli stessi anche quando non erano in condizione.

  6. Watching Lazio vs Udinese I learned that is nice to have players on your team that can properly strike the ball and score. Pedro at 38 can still score goals with great technique from outside the box that Milan “stars” can’t dream of. Top finishing ability by Lazio and Udinese players.
But, have you seen the highlights of Milan winger floating around social media? Who needs goals, when you can hype up 2 minute “highlights” video of a winger doing just about nothing

    1. LOL. Indeed. The 2-minute highlights-video I saw yesterday was really sad. Most of the clips were backpassing and other things every player does in every league on every level dozens and dozens of times per match. I think there was “highlight-worthy material” for a 10 second clip – if even that. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

And it started well with a 15-second introductory even before the opening whistle. 😀

  7. And for those of you rooting for Goretzka, 31, the starter Allegri is looking for, will Milan have a midfield pacy enough for UCL? Rabbit, 31, goretzka- 32, modric 41? If he stays?

    1. Agreed.

If they’re upgrading Fofana they need to go for a player with similar characteristics.

All he’s missing is an end product in terms of goals. He’s 50:50 on assists – he has been involved in assisting goals and key chances this season but against Juve he was frustrating.

      1. The problem is Saele doesn’t have a natural replacement. He’s been starting every game, no rotation. Pretty sure he’s spent. So if we want the first half of the season version of him, he needs to be rotated more often.

  8. Allegri must be salivating at the idea that such a feat is actually possible. I’m in stitches with this comment🤣🤣🤣🤣

  9. Leao looked fresher than he has in months. Possibly all season. He needs a goal but he got involved more than he has in most games.

As for losing the ball – yes he did but commentators need to decide whether:

    – attackers should ALWAYS be able to get past defenders (the criticism levelled at Leao);

    or

    – defenders should ALWAYS be able to stop attackers (the criticism levelled at Bartesaghi),

(the reality is that the majority of the time defenders will stop attackers because it’s easier to defend than dribble).

Saelemaekers was good but should’ve scored from Leao’s sublime pass.

Bartesaghi was bad but was injured.

Pulisic was ok but struggling for confidence and seemingly positioning.

Fofana was frustrating and Milan could possibly do with an upgrade there but I don’t think Goretzka is the answer. They need someone with Fofana’s characteristics but with an end product (although his assists should not be under-estimated).

The rest were solid and it was a solid 0:0.

    It hurts watching Locatelli.

    1. Wow – I actually agreed with most of this apart from the end 😂 Through your tears try to remember Locatelli’s a boyhood Juve fan who wanted to leave Milan…

      1. Thanks.

        Don’t give a sh% who Locatelli supported.

He started at Milan, he scored those goals and gave those memories, he formed a bond with Gabbia, Calabria and Cutrone that would’ve provided the foundations for the next 20 years, and Milan have pi##ed millions away signing players in his exact position for the last 10 years.

They didn’t even need to bother signing Tonali had they just kept Locatelli for free.

It’s the same all over the pitch.

    2. “As for losing the ball – yes he did but commentators need to decide whether:

      – attackers should ALWAYS be able to get past defenders (the criticism levelled at Leao);

      or

      – defenders should ALWAYS be able to stop attackers (the criticism levelled at Bartesaghi),

(the reality is that the majority of the time defenders will stop attackers because it’s easier to defend than dribble). ”

Well… Conceição did win all his dribbles (I think it was 7/7 at least a few minutes before being subbed off). So… No one is saying defenders should stop ALL the dribbles but I’m sure everyone agrees that they should be able to stop at least ONE in seven, eh? And no, by everyone I mean everyone but you as we all know how you think.

  10. Did you see any football star player at game?
Italy football is disaster we have derby and not have any great player at pich.
You can blame Alegri or anybody else but football is this country sucks.

  11. “The Diavolo had more than enough chances to score but were not clinical enough. ”

LOL! NOPE! Two chances aren’t “enough chances” – especially with the form of our attacking players. Did we even have two chances really? Saelemaekers sure had a chance but the others? It’s not like our xG was anything worth mentioning…

  12. 1. Defense continues to be solid when we play 3CB’s, who are good but not great/exceptional.
    2. Offence will continue to struggle as long as we have to jam square pegs into round holes and so far all of our 5 options appear square. Our goals are like drops of water in a desert.
    3. We can’t field any other formation to compromise defensive solidity because our back line isn’t good enough to play anything else.
    4. Max’s hands are tied until he gets the players he needs.
    5. Two more boring wins and we’re back in CL next season.
