AC Milan’s Champions League journey came to an end in rather embarrassing fashion as they drew 1-1 with Feyenoord at San Siro to lose 2-1 on aggregate.
Everything was going the way Milan would have hoped inside a minute when Santiago Gimenez was on hand to level the tie with a finish from close range after Malick Thiaw’s header back across goal.
However, everything fell apart in the second half after Theo Hernandez was shown red for two very silly yellow cards, and then Julian Carranza came off the bench to equalise on the night and send the Dutch side through.
It is certainly nothing short of a nightmare for the Rossoneri, who will have expected to progress to the last 16 of the competition even after the first leg deficit, but now see one of the big objectives go up in smoke.
Sergio Conceicao chose to make three changes to the starting line-up that faced Hellas Verona on Saturday with Strahinja Pavlovic, Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao all coming into the side, while Joao Felix and Santiago Gimenez also started to form the ‘Fantastic Four’ attack.
Milan could not have hoped for a better start than the one they made, as Gimenez scored against his former club after less than a minute. A corner was taken short by Theo Hernandez to Felix whose deep cross was nodded back across goal by Malick Thiaw, giving the Mexican striker the easy task of nodding in from close range just like against Verona.
The game continued at a frenzied pace after the fast start, with Feyenoord firing their first shot of the game over the bar through Moder, and then Tijjani Reijnders lashing one over from a similar range at the other end following Kyle Walker’s cut-back.
The Gimenez-Felix link-up was on full display in the 19th minute when the former curled a lovely pass to the latter who brought the ball down and dribbled into the box, eventually shooting but failing to keep it down.
Milan were inches away from taking the lead in the tie and the chance fell to Theo Hernandez. Felix had an attempt from inside the box parried into the path of the left-back who had stayed forward, and his first-time attempt crashed against the outside of the post.
Feyenoord began to grow into the game a bit and had a half-chance about 11 minutes before the interview with a break down Milan’s left side ending with a low cross that was met by a snapshot over the bar from Redmond.
Wellenreuther was tested again a few minutes before the interval and again it was Joao Felix who was found on the edge of the box with time to turn and fire, though the goalkeeper again met it with a firm parry.
Not long after that, Leao was found by a wonderful ball from Joao Felix over the shoulder of the full-back Read, which he brought down brilliantly and managed to get off a shot from close quarters that was well stopped in the end.
Milan started the second half on the front foot and twice had Feyenoord scrambling. Firstly Leao sent Theo through to the byline and his cut-back was cleared by a desperate sliding challenge, then when the ball came back into the box Walker’s rocket was claimed by Wellenreuther.
In the 52nd minute, the referee Marciniak made a huge call in the scheme of the game as he sent Theo Hernandez off for a second yellow card. Leao once again sent a ball through to his overlapping run but the Frenchman flung himself to the floor suggesting he had been fouled, yet he was judged to have simulated and was given his marching orders.

After an initial spell of Feyenoord pressure without so much as a shot on goal, Milan grew into things again and Pulisic perhaps should have tested the goalkeeper more when cutting in on his right foot from the left flank and unleashing a rocket of a shot. Then, a change was made to react to the red card, with Davide Bartesaghi coming on for the American.
Another substitution came from Conceicao with 20 minutes left and it was Gimenez who was withdrawn for Youssouf Fofana. It saw Felix move up into a false nine position, with the coach clearly wanting to keep the weapon of Leao’s pace on the break.
The worst nightmare became reality in the 74th minute as Feyenoord equalised on the night and re-took the lead on aggregate. A pinpoint cross from the right by Bueno found Carranza, who had nestled between Pavlovic and Bartesaghi, and was able to head in from close range.
A couple of minutes after Thiaw had headed a teasing free-kick from Reijnders into the arms of Wellenreuther, Samuel Chukwueze and Tammy Abraham were brought on for Reijnders and Musah.
Milan huffed and puffed towards the end, launching cross after cross into the box and hoping for something to fall, but it never did and the jeers at full-time said everything.
Anybody that says THEO’s contract should be renewed must be stup*d!!!! He should be sent packing for free now!! This isn’t his first time doing this sh*t!!! F*ck this!! This is so infuriating!!!!!!!!!Milan!!!!
you know how to run a club. go support some other club.
Please don’t try to defend Theo, he really messed the match today
It’s mind boggling how ummotivated this team can be….absolutely embarrassing
Well we’re in full throttle in the 1st half and should’ve scored more than one. This game really defined with that one particular moment of red card. Motivation is surely not an issue on this match.
Theo the 🤡
i understand that people are angry at Theo, but that ref is a . you dont give a second yellow for this. yes – according to the rules you can do it, but you just dont.
like many games before, a ref who wanted to make a decisive call. similar situation later he didnt even give a simple yellow
I agree, refs use to be more understanding of context. However, if Theo doesn’t pull that boneheaded move for the first yellow then he wouldn’t have gotten the red. There was no reason to do that and like usual, his hot headedness gets us in trouble. But yes, that 2nd yellow was weak.
Fully agree. Somehow if I can choose, his first yellow was much more stupid than the second one. Pretty doubtable 2nd yellow too as Theo didn’t even react or complaint on getting fouled.
But then again, we’re really used to his antics here and there. So this is far from surprising from Theo. Take it or leave it kind of thing. Just like his compatriot Leao as well.
You are wrong. Actors like Hernandez kill football and should make career in Hollywood instead of Play on football pitch
Of course he should be given the second one as he clearly dived to get a penalty kick. 1rst one was also fully punishable. Unfortunately we and Theo has him to thank for it. Not to mention that if Var had come in with a verdict then the end result would be the same which just further underlines Theos stupidity.
I’ll look forward to hear Theos response as he grossly failed the club and his team mates by his actions.
Spot on point Martin, thank you
No thank you Dante.
i read many comments here about everything is bad, but you are not a miserable person like them. have you really ever seen a VAR overruling for a second yellow in this situation?
Well thanks but that really isn’t my point here.
My point here is that Theo pretty much doomed himself there as the result would be the same. Had the penalty kick initially been given then the Var would have reported that there was no contact which there clearly wasn’t so the referee would still end up giving him the yellow card for diving so yes I do think its fully plausible.
Had it happened a different place on the field then Var wouldn’t have come into play.
Excellent analysis. Thanks, Martin.
Ye, the ref killed the game more then Theo, guess the ref didnt like his clown haircut, but as others say,its not the Theos first,2nd,10th bullshi…he also made big mistakes during the game, the milanistas will not forgive him this, he will be gone in sommer(hopefully) .
Red Bird will show Theo next season
Feyenoord won! Yea!! !!!
Redbirdy and the clowns come back and try next season. Thanks for watching! big heart
**Side notes: Feyenoord’s scored a better goal than Milan
good game
Theo is not disciplined. He has a bad attitude. He picks up silly yellow cards all the time. He hasn’t matured. He needs to go. Leao stays, Maignan stays, Hernandez goes.
Ibra and co should go too
We are going down since redbird
Oh well I’m watching Atalanta now. Got to recover my taste after watching this depressing, unmotivated, tasteless team and their headless running up and down the field. Pathetic to say the least.
Agreed. They look like playing basketball for me. Ask Mus-sahh..
Yea, I’m rooting for other italian teams. 🙂
How did that go? 😅
Theo and leao once again making us play with 9 men, and Mike really not helping his case for a new contract. Pulling of Puli and Gimenez when they’re easily our best attackers rn was a ridiculous decision. Especially when Sergio should damn well know by now that we’re not a team that can play park the bus. Just a complete mess that’s learned nothing…
Yea, wild decisions for sure. I thought Gimenez had a knock or something and maybe he does? If not, wow just terrible. I get that Pulisic didn’t have 90 min and going down a man cut the time he had left on the pitch in half so bummer but Gimenez stays on at all costs and the fact that he took so long to put on another striker, YOU’RE LOSING, why would you play with a false nine or what ever that was with Felix of all people, MY GOODNESS. Just for that, he deserves to go.
Mentally, his bags are packed..
Sarge will pick him at the weekend though. He should pack his bage too; mindless subs, worse than Pioli
I already unfollow the BAST*RD THEO ON INSTA!! This players don’t deserve pity with huge pay and no result… I missed the old Milan… I missed my favourite player; Kakà!❤️❤️ I missed Maldini, Gattuso, Sheva, Inzaghi, Seedorf, Nesta, Pirlo, Ambrosini and more. Even Lapadula and Cutronè would d*I on the pitch for Milan….. These players would play their lives. These current players are useless!!!
Well atleast they can focus on the league and coppa now. Too bad for Theo. He puts ref’s on the spot with all his diving. The BOY who cried wolf.
You cannot blame the ref for following the rules. Neither can you fault him for doing exactly what he was hired to do.
Theo on the other hand should have his contact terminated immediately. He is a professional and should know better than the two silly yellow cards he got today. Both were avoidable and had he performed like one of the more “senior and experienced” members of the squad, perhaps things would be different
The ref was 100% right giving that second yellow. It was an epic dive
he is hired to lead a fair game while staying in the background.
he is not hired to change a game with one decision which could go both ways.
exactly. not at all upset with the booking… i’m upset with that embarrassing dive when he’s on a yellow.
however, the ref should’ve booked the Feyenoord player for doing the exact same thing toward the end of the match, but whatever…
On the bright side, this saves us the humiliation of getting destroyed by Arsenal or Inter.
The ref was 100% right. The dive was so clear and completely unnecessary. Leao set him up perfectly, we should have scored, instead he goes for an OBVIOUS dive.
What a bad night. This feels like a sabotage, really. What a forgettable season. Please use the next 5-6 months or so to PLAN PROPERLY.
The moment you cannot beat teams like Zagreb and feyenood because of a red card, just know you are a average team, we would have not made it pass the next round with this useless coach and management, you foolish fans should keep on blaming theo, same way you blame musah, you can’t notice your coach want aggressive football
Yeah of course, that Maignan’s slip was surely also the coach’s fault.
Yea sure, that Maignan’s slip was also the coach’s fault for sure.
How is Theo not to blame?
Theo was the main one to blame. But then Conceicao did not know how to handle the match. He put the wrong substitutes. Gimenez should have stayed. Joao Felix needed to be subbed. The same with Musah. The substitutions were awful. Sometimes nota ll coaches are ready to handle big clubs. Still it is his first season and firing coaches all the time will not solve the problem. I think he just needs to be more realistic when some players needs to be out of the field.
This site is extremely stupid, how can you say someone posts too quickly when you haven’t posted anything yet
Not sure whether the team needs therapy – or a heart transplant – or both. Player leadership is completely absent …. it’s like the inmates (Theo, Leao) are running the asylum and the rest of the more dedicated, hustling crew (basically the other field players) are emotionally dragged down by the lack of effort and immaturity. Theo is gone at this point; no sane GM/Sporting Director would re-sign him after today’s 2 boneheaded calls. Leao also is 70% of the player he was 2 years ago. The team needs Pulisic, Giminez, Walker to rise up and take over player leadership.
The definition of insanity is …? Continuing to rely on player-leaders who neither make good decisions nor set good examples.
to all the people who want Sergio out – since he is there we made one point less than Napoli and equa.lly or more than any other top team. Zagreb and Feyenoord were individual mistakes. ah.. and we won a title. you play too much fifa.
After 7 games in charge he had 3 points more than Fonzy.
Sergio – 7 games, 14 points
Fonzy – 7 games, 11 points
It’s a booking, no doubt, Milan fan or not. He got two needless cards. Theo Hernandez doesn’t think about consequences, and, today, he got the full reward for all the stupid things that he does on the pitch that cost the team in the past. If this were a company, he would have been sacked. I wonder how the coach would be feeling at the moment. Now, he has put him under so much pressure.
The unsportsmanlike behavior in this sport is sickening. Wonder if (too) many players mentality is such that they are not good enough therefore one must cheat to win.
“… Gimenez scored against his former club after less than a minute. A corner was taken short by Theo Hernandez to Felix whose deep cross was nodded back across goal by Malick Thiaw, giving the Mexican striker the easy task of nodding in from close range just like against Verona.”
Uh… that wasn’t Felix with the deep cross, though it would seem so many folks would have liked it to have been. Mind-boggling that he was on the pitch for the whole match. Maddening, as well.
Pulisic created the goal out of nowhere. 🙂
Yeah meanwhile Leão and João get all of the ball and the shots and create nothing… Pulisic creates the goal and they’ll say he was invisible
I’d take “invisible but decide” over “flashy & ineffective” every time. Every. Time.
Pulisic was dropping dimes in the box for teammates seemingly unexpecting them. The worst was Felix at the far post on a Pulisic corner. I wonder if it hit his foot by accident…
While Theo’s red (and Musah’s before it) will generate a lot of rightful heat, it’s important to note that in the prior 3 UCL matches, we were outplayed 1-2 in 180 minutes of 11v11 by the mighty likes of Zagreb and Feyenoord
It’s easy to beat Milan under Conceicau
– weak defense
– the players plays without motivation and keeps making big blunder after big blunder
My prediction we wouldn’t qualify for next season CL nor EL. Heck, we’re not gonna win the coppa too. This season is done.
PULISIC MADE THE CROSS ON THE GOAL.
Just wanted to get your attention for a correction. It wasn’t Felix but Pulisic who sent the lovely cross to the back post for Thiaw to head back over to Santi.
Leao could take 10 crosses and seemingly never put it on someone’s head.
I said it here yesterday. He got the substitutions wrong. Also, I think he has soft spot for Felix and if so, that would be his wrong doing. Felix would not give you the number of goal and assist you need.
Leao and Theo too passive in their style of play. Fofana is not a DM to trust. I wish Bondo is an uplift on Fofana.
The team is not totally bad, though full with a lot of average players. This kind of average players need a working playing style. For two season now, it has always been individual ingenuity that won us games.
If theo should be sold them then they need to put money and for fraudbird don’t do that unfortunately same with Leao If they are going to sell them because we probably won’t make it to CL spot then they need to put good money for replacements.
