AC Milan 2-2 Torino: Morata and Okafor engineer late comeback in Fonseca’s debut

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s 2024-25 Serie A season began in a dramatic way as they battled from two goals behind to draw 2-2 at San Siro against Torino on Saturday night.

Preseason wins over Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Monza had fans dreaming, but it quickly turned into a nightmare in what was a very lethargic and at times sloppy performance until the final few minutes.

The first Torino goal came in bizarre circumstances as Malick Thiaw failed to clear a ball off the line, while Duvan Zapata got the second for a Torino side also having their debut under a new head coach.

However, the substitutions injected life as Alvaro Morata opened his account for the Diavolo with an instinctive finish, and then Noah Okafor thumped in a volley in added time to complete the comeback and earn a draw.

Paulo Fonseca named an interesting starting line-up for the game, with the main headline being that Alexis Saelemaekers started at left-back over Theo Hernandez, who is not yet in the best condition. Luka Jovic also got the nod up front over Alvaro Morata, meaning none of the new signings started.

The game started in a predictably cagey manner as Milan’s 4-2-3-1 system attempted to play out of Torino’s high press, and the first chance of note came in the sixth minute. The Rossoneri broke through the lines easily with Davide Calabria and Christian Pulisic, before Rafael Leao’s low shot deflected just wide of the far post.

From the resulting corner it should really have been 1-0 to the home side. Malick Thiaw rose highest and saw a header cleared off the line but only to Leao, who somehow lifted his shot over the bar from a few yards out.

Torino eased themselves into the game, which is also the first for them under a new head coach in Paolo Vanoli, and Zapata might have wished he had tested Mike Maignan in the 15th minute when he was given time and space to shoot from 20 yards but dragged it wide.

The first save of the game was made by Milinkovic-Savic in the Torino goal as he did well to parry Pulisic’s effort over from Leao’s cut-back, though the offside flag had already gone up as the Portuguese winger went too early.

Milan’s threat continued to pass through Leao, who in a short space of time saw a weak shot saved by Milinkovic-Savic, was just evaded by a cross to the far post and then whipped another effort with his left foot wide of the upright.

Just after the half-hour mark, Torino took the lead and it came in very bizarre circumstances. A cross went from one side to the other and Bellanova headed it back across goal. The ball hit the post and it seemed as though Malick Thiaw had scrambled it off the line, yet the referee stopped the game about 30 seconds later and then eventually gave the goal, stating it had in fact crossed.

Milan continued to struggle with the aerial ball and Maignan did excellently to deny Zapata with a reflex save with his legs after the striker had rose to meet a corner at the near post with a glancing header.

The Rossoneri’s biggest chance of the first half came a few minutes before the break when Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s through ball put Leao clear through on goal, and though he did well to brush off a challenge his low shot was saved by Milinkovic-Savic.

The visitors continued to provide a threat of their own down the right side, with Maignan again saving brilliantly to thwart Ilic’s effort from the edge of the box after Bellanova’s cut-back. At the other end, Chukwueze let fly from range and whistled a shot not far wide.

Milan had the first clear opportunity of the second half and it was gifted to them by the Granata. A slack pass back to Milinkovic-Savic was picked up by Pulisic, who rounded the goalkeeper but only found the side netting with his shot.

Just before the hour mark, Fonseca decided to make a triple change as Jovic, Bennacer and Chukwueze all made way with Alvaro Morata, Tijjani Reijnders and Theo Hernandez coming on in their place.

It looked like Morata had made an instant impact when he went down inside the box after a challenge from Coco and the referee pointed to the spot, but after a VAR review the decision was rightly made to overturn it as he got the ball.

Torino then stunned the San Siro crowd into silence by doubling their advantage through Zapata. A move down Milan’s right side saw Lazara afforded time and space to cross, and he picked out his team-mate with an inch-perfect cross that was headed in from close range.

Pulisic again should have done better with a chance just inside the final 20 minutes as a low driven cross fell to him near the penalty spot, yet he laced it over the bar. That would be his last bit of action as he made way for his compatriot Yunus Musah.

Morata thought that he had opened his Milan account when he thumped in a rebound from a Reijnders shot, though the offside flag rightly went up. The final change from Fonseca saw Noah Okafor take Calabria’s place.

Morata did get his first goal in a red and black shirt to give the home fans something to cheer. Musah had a shot blocked, then Reijnders let fly and the Spanish striker was on hand to redirect the Dutchman’s attempt into the bottom corner.

Then, in the fifth minute of added time, Milan got an equaliser. Musah wound up a cross from the right side and the Swiss forward had made a central run, firing past Milinkovic-Savic with an excellent volley.

    1. I gotta agree with Cess and Rossi even though I would have liked the ref to have made some other decisions in some situations his performance was fair..

  1. if Okafor doesn’t start the next game he’s got to be at least the first name off the bench. He should have been our starting striker the whole of last season

  2. – Pioli’s DNA is still planted too deep. Even the goal scoring process was Pioli’s trademark.
    – Nothing changed on our defence. Hopefully Pavlovic, Emerson, and Fofana can shake things up.
    – Jovic as our no 9 holder is a pure joke
    – We should really consider Chuk’s future, while the rare opportunity like Chiesa lurking
    – Fonseca should proof, sooner than later, he’s more than just a more hairy more a bit good looking version of Pioli

  3. Ghastly defending. Don’t do that to Saelemaekers again. Calabria should be embarrassed and Thiaw shouldn’t see a start for a long while.

Up front they should have had 4-5 goals, I expect the finishing to get better as players round into form.

  4. I would actually have nothing against seeing Okafor on the right wing. Not Chuku. Not Saele. But Okafor. He produces.

    So;

    Maignan
    Saelemaekers – Tomori – Pavlović – Theo
    Reijnders – Fofana
    Okafor – Pulisic – Leao
    Morata

    1. Let’s give Chukweze a chance without Calabria behind him then we can see if he is a flop or not. Every right winger have been bad with Calabria behind them.

  5. Leao can’t score empty goal, and one on one’s…

We can’t say anything about his talent. He is too old today.

Chukwueze… what happened with player who was playing in Villareal?

    Should we change formation to 3 5 2 ?

And selling all stars except Theo and Maignan,,?

  6. This milan was toothless, to compete for this scudetto milan need more than Fofana and Thiaw must need to be sold, he continue were he left it last season being a disaster at the back. get Hummes for free to bring leadership and calmness to the defence line.

Rafa was wasteful and I think Bennecer really need to be sold and bring one of Kone or Another Captain America.

Musah and Okafor really made impact from the bench and they both got Milan a draw. The comeback was even needed after inter drew 2-2 any defeat would have been a disaster

Thanks to Okafor and Musa 💯

  7. Man, I take the point but something has to change in this dreadful defense, not reliable at all. Fofana can’t integrate soon enough.

  8. Forsenca must be very unwell to pick that starting 11, I don’t want to say anything negetive but if this is how the coach wants to deploy Saladmakers versatility then I’d rather he’d be swapped with Chiesa. Malik shouldn’t be seeing the pitch for a long time..

  9. I think we could and should have been ahead with a couple of goals early on which would have completely changed the match but missed some fairly open chances on the other hand we could also easily have lost with 4 goals so had it not been for our late resurgence I pretty much would have rated the performance 1 out of 10. When that is said I’ll give credit for the last ten minutes of the match but that simply isn’t enough but I’m at least relieved that we didn’t lose. A lost opportunity considering Inters draw but at least the season is long and we can only improve from now on.

      1. 😀 to be fair I always supported Pioli, at least up until the last month or so of his tenure where he clearly seemed to have lost his marbles in his selection choices.
I also support Fonseca but I certainly expects us to do a lot better in the next match

  10. I don’t like our kind of play. They were faster than us. Morata is indeed our savior and game-changer, I love his spirit and determination in the game.
He better start the next match.
We should not allow Poli’s lazy kind of play to continue.
Our players need to change their mental orientation so they will know Poli kind of play needs to end.
In the first half, they all played Poli kind of ball.

  11. It’s early in the season. No need to jump off a high bridge. Leao will round into form. The back line was indeed a disaster but Pavlovian and Royal will be playing soon. Agree that Thiaw is a large block of ice that should sit on the bench to Thaw out.

Theo, Okafor and Musah had huge late impact.

  12. Morata and Leao did look good. Remember some of our starters and new signings didn’t start. Pavlovic is a must. We can’t see another game with Thiaw.

It’s just the first match and we did show spirit to fight back. Give it time.

  13. A lot of questions after today’s game…

-Why is Alexis starting in any sort of defensive capacity and completely out of position?

    – Why is Jovic still being tried as a lone 9 when we d*minute well know he can’t play there?

-Why is our defense looking like amateur hour? Thiaw look shaky.

I feel like Fonseca should have started with the strongest lineup and then subbed out whoever is tired, like Reijnders/Theo/Morata, instead of the players he started with, then having to make a comeback…

This thing will take a minute to come together, but Jesus Lord – looked like amateur hour out there for over an hour… Instead of trying to take advantage of Inter’s slip up.

  14. I still insist that chukwueze don’t deserve to be in Milan.A player that can not pass a defender non give an accurate pass.Pioli give him enough chance yet is still mess up.This chukuw is liability to our team.

    Calabria is a waste,
    Thiaw can never be usefull

  15. In my opinion, I think Fonseca underrated the torino team, if not, why tf would he play salad in such position?

I don’t really care whether Chukwu or salad starts in the right flank, all I care about is good result.

It’s high time we find one better left winger to compete with Leao for him to up his shots.

Morata is recruited to replace Giroud, our starting striker…. Please allow Morata to start, I think Jovic is only better coming from the bench, just as how Okafor is also better coming from the bench.

Pulisic, bennercer and RLC, I reserve my comment.

Lastly, Thiaw should report himself to the nearest station for all the nonsense he performed on the field today. If we can just dash Newcastle Thiaw as a compensation or appreciation for our deal last in season’s mercato(I forgot the guy’s name already).

  16. its early and we have new coach. calm all your titties.

give time to the new coach and system, our defence was bad since last 2 season. do you think its easy to mend in 5 weeks?

i will give 1 season to see how it works. first season in, CL place in league and QF of CL is good enough.

  17. Was that Pioli-ball I just watched or Fonseca-ball. Looked the exact same to me lol.

Jovic masquerading as a #9 again – LOLOLOLO.

Are we sure we wanna get rid of Kalulu?

We are unbalanced with Pulisic as a CAM – tho he did good today – too much space between him and the double pivots.

Ibra better not be resting on day 7 – he better be making more signings – starting with another #9

  18. I did not understand leaving Saelemakers in and pulling Puli out at 70 minutes. I worry that Fonseca is pigeonholing Puli in as CAM, where he’s good, but he’s also very good at RW or LW. I guess it’s good to keep Puli minutes down, since he did put in a shift doing a lot of defensive work and offensive work. No sense in breaking him first game out, I guess…

The more I see of Saelemakers, the less useful he seems. He’s strong defensively, in theory, but he’s not fast enough and doesn’t get back as well as he should, so if his opposing winger or fullback is speedy, and most are, he’s not that helpful when we are playing high possession and other teams are counterattacking.

I liked both RLC and Musah in midfield this game. Bennacer did not convince. Thiaw was not ready to play.

  19. Even though I wanted a win, it was good to see the coach experiment. We all can pick our first eleven from the players we have, but, what happens when injuries set in? Trying players in different positions is good for us. We can’t keep playing in a predictable way as we did under Pioli. Those who didn’t play well last night can still work on their games. But, I am happy with the options we have. Only issue is still with the defense. Milan needs an experienced central defender. I don’t want to say Hummels, but, someone with good experience. We can’t rely all season on Tomori and Thiaw, even though we have Pavlovic. It’s not enough.

  20. In my opinion, calabria toothless compared to bellanova. Hes more aggressive and speedy. Milan must re sign bellanova before windows shut down.
