AC Milan’s 2022 summer mercato: All the official sales, loan exits and details

By Isak Möller -

The 2022 edition of the summer transfer window has come to an end and AC Milan made quite a lot of sales. In total, the Rossoneri decided to part ways with seven first-team players plus others.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara did a good job this summer with clearing out and that made space for some new signings (read here). Down below is a summary of Milan’s summer sales with all the details you need to know, courtesy of Transfermarkt and various sources.

Alessandro Plizzari

Deal: Permanent transfer.
Fee: €200k.
Destination: Pescara.

The goalkeeper never really got the chance with the first team (due to poor timing) and Milan decided now was the time to sell him. They didn’t get that much but it’s something, and it was the right decision for Plizzari too.

Mattia Caldara

Deal: Initial loan deal.
Fee: €3m option to buy.
Destination: Spezia.

After a loan spell at Venezia, the centre-back was sent back out again by Milan, who no longer have him in their future plans. His contract will expire in 2024 and the hope is that Spezia will make the deal permanent next summer.

Alessio Romagnoli

Deal: Free transfer.
Destination: Lazio.

The captain served Milan well during his years at the club but it was time to move on. He lost his starting spot to Fikayo Tomori and the Rossoneri didn’t want to satisfy his renewal demands. The move to Lazio, his boyhood club, was thus very expected.

Franck Kessie

Deal: Free transfer.
Destination: Barcelona.

Milan tried to keep the Ivorian but ultimately didn’t want to break the bank to do so. He got his farewell goal in the Scudetto-winning game against Sassuolo and there are no hard feelings in the end.

Daniel Maldini

Deal: Season-long loan
Fee: –
Destination: Spezia.

The youngster needs playing time and it only made sense for Milan to send him out on loan. Hellas Verona were also interested but the choice fell on Spezia in the end. It will be interesting to see him playing (hopefully) consistently in the first-tier this season.

Samu Castillejo

Deal: Permanent transfer.
Fee: Undisclosed.
Destination: Valencia.

The Spaniard had been linked with a move for quite some time but it (finally) materialised. He was no longer a consistent part of the matchday squad and thus it made sense for him to move on. The fee was never disclosed, but it’s not high.

Lorenzo Colombo

Deal: Initial loan deal.
Fee: Undisclosed, buy-out option plus buy-back.
Destination: Lecce.

Just like Maldini, the striker needs consistent plating time and a loan move was on the cards all summer. He joined Lecce in July and it was revealed that there is a buy-out option in the deal, but also a buy-back. He scored a screamer last time out and the feeling is that Milan want to keep him.

Honourable mentions

There are a few Primavera players that deserve mentioning, especially since some of them have appeared a little bit for the first team. Frank Tsadjout joined Cremonese for €850k and Marco Brescianini as well as starlet Marco Nasto were sent to Cosenza on a season-long loan.

The Swedes Emil Roback and Lukas Björklund have left the club; the former on a loan deal (to FC Nordsjælland) and the latter on a permanent basis (to SønderjyskE). Nicholas Michelis left on a free transfer to CD Mirandes.

Then, of course, Frankfurt redeemed Jens Petter Hauge for a fee of €10m, while Leo Duarte was redeemed by Basaksehir for a fee of €2m.
