AC Milan’s 2022 summer mercato: All the official signings and details

By Isak Möller -

The 2022 edition of the summer transfer window has come to a close and AC Milan ended up making quite a few reinforcements. In total, the Rossoneri brought in five news players and down below is the full summary.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara received some criticism throughout the summer and there were a few question marks. However, in the end, reinforcements were brought in and it’s clear they focused on making targeted signings.

Down below is a summary of Milan’s summer window with all the details you need to know, courtesy of Transfermarkt and various sources.

Divock Origi

Deal: Free transfer.
From: Liverpool.

The Belgian was the first signing of the summer window, not counting the redemptions, and his arrival was well-known since the end of May. Given his experience, getting him on a free transfer was a good move by Maldini and Massara. It remains to be seen what he can do on the pitch.

Charles De Ketelaere

Deal: Permanent transfer.
Fee: €32m, €3m in bonuses, 15% resale clause.
From: Club Brugge.

The negotiations took forever, yet he was the second signing for Milan this summer. It’s a significant investment for a club like Milan but from what we have seen on the pitch thus far, the Rossoneri made the right move.

Malick Thiaw

Deal: Permanent transfer.
Fee: €5m, €2m in bonuses.
From: Schalke 04.

Pioli made it clear very early that a centre-back was needed given the exit of Alessio Romagnoli. After missing out on a few targets, Milan decided to go all-out for Thiaw and managed to snatch him for a good price as well given his age (21).

Aster Vranckx

Deal: Initial loan deal.
Fee: €2m loan, €12m option to buy, 15% resale clause.
From: Wolfsburg.

Another youngster brought in by Milan this summer (19). A midfielder was needed for the tandem, given Kessie’s exit, and once again the Rossoneri made an investment for the future. It will be very exciting to see him in action to earn the buy-out.

Sergino Dest

Deal: Initial loan deal
Fee: €20m option to buy
From: Barcelona

Milan were forced to act quickly after Alessandro Florenzi sustained an injury against Sassuolo two days ago. They will pay Dest’s salary but it’s not a paid loan, which is a bonus. It remains to be seen if he will be included in the UCL squad list.

Honourable mentions

The likes of Alessandro Florenzi and Junior Messias were redeemed from Roma and Crotone respectively this summer. Yacine Adli and Tommaso Pobega also joined the first team after spending last season on loan, while Antonio Mirante signed a new contract with the club.

  1. Looking back at all those expensive rumors that never materialized in the end, it was such a waste of time. The only good signing Milan made was in my opinion getting CDK. The rest will have to convince whether they need to stay or not.

    1. Hahaha you actually believe all that nonsense? 😂😂😂 I said many times, just follow the one interview Maldini gave in which he said they weren’t looking at Botman nor Sanches..rest was made up

      1. Did you mean the interview few days after scudetto in which Maldini talked down Botman rumour and spoke of the interest in past tense?

  2. I think this is a good Mercato. After Thiaw,I didn’t think anyone would come but I was wrong. Still like everyone, wish there was an RW upgrade. But that will be for January I guess.

Off topic but I was looking at PSGs last few signings. Looks so shady af. Carlos Soler market value 50mil by they paid like 17mil??? Fabian Ruiz 55mil but they got him for 23mil? How? How? How?

  3. – I like the reinforcements, all in line with what Milan has been trying to do the last 4 years.
    – Not happy with making Florenzi and Messias contract permanent. Especially Florenzi, at least Messias is on a low salary and will play most games with probably 5+ goals. Florenzi is just an expensive cheerleader
    – Livid that for the umpteenth transfer window in a row Maldini failed to bring a proper RW. Hopefully, maybe, Dest can be transformed into a winger, since he is very good attacking, taking on a defender and crossing than defending

  4. I think Dest is a smart move. He is a classic right full back, not only he can take all the right flank, he can also play as a RW in front of Calabria.
The only question is if he will adapt into Italian style and tactics…And of course if his body is strong enough for Serie A.
If all is good he would be a great asset.
I’m just hoping Vranckx would be a bullseye signing because we need a player deep in the midfield

  5. All in all, considering the actual conditions, and taking into account all the complexities of a transfermarket made in the midst of a societary takeover, I guess I’m very satisfied. Now lets be patient and for the new signings to properly gel into the squad. CDK is beyond any doubt the highlight of the lot, but I guess Dest and Vranckx will also materialize into great deals. I would have not redeemed Messias and also tried to sold Saelaemakers in order to sign a better RW, but anyway, I’m confident that we’ll succeed and make a double on Serie A.

  6. Adli was also an excellent signing, but I’m not taking him into account, obviously, cause he is from our last summer mercato. Dunno anything about Thiaw, but its a profile that fits well with the philosophy implemented by Pioli and the board, so I guess its a move that deserves to be trusted. Finally, concerning Origi, to be entirely honest I have my doubts about the guy, but I always prefer to be hopeful, at least at first… besides that, one has to recognize that the man is really lucky and charismatic on the big matches… well, we’ll see, lets hope.

  7. Yep, Dragon Fire, in the end that’s what really matters: this team looks stronger than 2021/22 squad. At least on paper, of course. We’ll se how it will work in the field. My greatest hope is that our worst weakness (well, imho a problem far worst than our troubles with RWs) in the last few seasons seems to be at least fixed: the ACM position.

  8. Not bad i think . With just 50m euro budget transfer fee they manage cover many position . Dest can play both RB & RW. If he play RB then RW must be lord saladmaker because defensive winger, if dest play RW then RB must be calabria because good in defense . Over all dest are full speed RB that can faster than vini jr in la liga . Origi can cover striker due to rebic & zlatan injury prone , CDK are highest investment this season but he is worth . The other need to prove themselves in squad like adili, aster, thiaw, pobega. Bad decision only in permanently buy junior & florenzi

  9. The ACM position can be THE centre of gravity of a team in terms of offensive actions, when properly executed functions like a beacon from where plenty of lethal moves irradiates. I guess CDK will turn into that beacon.

  10. I think apart from CDK, Thiaw really got my interest. very young, cheap buy and have huge potential. What i like about this Milan is they always find this hidden gem. if they didnt work out or cant find time to play, they can still be sold and have value. maybe can even get profit from them. showing u can get good players that can fit the system without breaking the bank

  11. Kudos to MM,they did well with just meagre amount for the mercato and actually got good players with high potentials, with blown up prices even for mediocres and over rated players, Milan’s concept has been amazing.

  12. I don’t see Florenzi as an error but messias permanent signing was error bcos we have opportunity to sign Ziyech or they could have sell Salaemaka and get ziyech if Dey consider Measias will still improve becos according to an analyst he said messias need time Bcos he came from a low clas team. Good Marcado we now have 2 players per position

  13. Overall for me this is a good summer transfer.

Sure Maldini & Masara can’t turn Romagnoli, Kessie, and Castilejo into decent pocket money. But at least 2M made an efficient transfer signings and continue the young guns project alive for 4 consecutive season without making Milan close to bankrupt and banned to compete in Champions League.

  14. Ac Milan first team should be:

    ————-Maignan————–
    ———-tomori–kalulu————
    calabria——————hernandez
    ——–tonali—–bennacer——–
    Dest———-CDK———-Leo—
    —————Giroud—————-

  15. Its been a decent rather good transfer window with avaliable budget and other things. For once we got cdk which is the nerve center of our creativity I am sure when ibra comes back we will thrive……but yes midfield is most I am worried about I hope this new guy comes good with time….along with rw. I got a feeling we will have a change of system with 3 5 2 with theo and dest coming as full backs at some point in season or in between matches…..
