GdS: Sanchez-Giroud duel and Theo’s red – Guida gets key incidents in Inter-Milan right

By Oliver Fisher -

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport has taken a look back at the controversial incidents during AC Milan’s 2-1 derby success against Inter last night.

The newspaper (via MilanLive) refers back to the clash between Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez during the build-up for the equalising goal, an incident which according to many Inter fans was an obvious foul.

There is no doubting that the Frenchman arrives first to the ball, but then collides with the Nerazzurri forward and sends him flying. However, the paper notes that it is a battle in which VAR cannot intervene because the decision rests solely with the referee, who must evaluate the intensity and dynamics of the challenge.

Guida set his stall out early by whistling only the clearest fouls and that is why he cannot be adjudged to have got the decision wrong. Regarding the goal that was disallowed for Inter in the first half and Theo’s red card at the end, the decisions were correct.
