AC Milan, the Scudetto and the aims for the 2022-23 season

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan is becoming the super team we know them to be, and it has been a long, hard, and excruciating journey for the Rossoneri.

After many seasons of floundering in the Europa League, they finally made it to the Champions League, putting them back in the Champions League odds. Although it was a disappointing campaign, the team can focus on coming back to get number eight.

With Champions League qualification out of the way, winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2011. In addition to that, it has been 6 years since the team last won a trophy. Therefore, winning the Scudetto would be a major boost because it would take the team to another level and give them the booster needed to face next season’s challenge.

The team has all it takes to win the title. However, it is not an easy battle with the defending champions consistently on their neck, lurking and waiting for a slip-up. As a result, Milan has to be at its best for the remainder of the season. And with two games to go, the Rossoneri can get back to Serie A glory.

The remaining hurdles

AC Milan has two games left to win the Serie A title this season, and as a result, they are facing Atalanta and Sassuolo. Playing Sassuolo might not be a big challenge, given that the team doesn’t have anything to fight for this season. A win in both games would only take them as high as 9th on the log.

Therefore, Milan can brush through Sassuolo when they visit the Mapei Stadium in the last game of the season. However, one thing is that we can’t write off any team in the Serie A and playing for pride can be enough motivation for a team to do damage. Therefore, we expect Pioli to prepare well for that encounter.

The tough one is against Atalanta as the team fights to get one of the remaining European spots. They currently sit 8th on the log with the same points as Roma and Fiorentina. Therefore, a win in their last two matches is as important as AC Milan’s. In that case, it will be tough because anything but a win for both teams can prove costly for their dreams.

Inter: rivals and challengers

The Serie A title race this season has been incredible. We have seen a rollercoaster of events, and the title race went from a 4-horse race to two. And the best part is that it is between the two greatest Milano teams. Therefore, it shines a new light on one of the greatest rivalries in the sport’s history.

Inter is only two points behind AC in the title race. Therefore, the last two games will be crucial as they fight to keep hold of their title. The defending champions didn’t have a great start to the season because they lost two key players in the summer. However, they bounced back and are now closer to retaining the title.

The squad

Competing with Inter for the title is down to the squad and who wants it the most. AC Milan seems like they are hungry to win. We’ve seen it, especially with the game against Fiorentina that seemed all but drawn. Therefore, there is a drive, and in some cases, the bench can come on to help the team.

Fortunately, there isn’t too much reliance on 40-year-old Ibrahimovic, thanks to the signing of Oliver Giroud. In addition, we see Ante Rebic help out as well. Aside from that, the midfielders have also been major players in the team so far, helping to keep the balance and transition from defence to attack. Finally, the defensive work has been exquisite as no team has conceded less than them all season.

Next season

With this season almost, there is no doubt that talks would have been up for next season. Competing properly in the Champions League is important, and finding good replacements for ageing veterans is also vital. If Milan wants to be competitive next season, the team needs some reinforcements.

The first step should be bringing in a prolific striker to score goals as Ibrahimovic and Giroud are close to retirement. The team needs to start thinking long-term, and getting a solid striker is one of the steps to take. Aside from that, Pioli might have to tweak his tactics in the Champions League so that there is no repeat of this season’s disappointment.

Our thoughts and predictions

We think there is a good chance that AC Milan will win the Scudetto this season. As a result, it will boost the team’s morale and ability to pull in better talent. Therefore, we look forward to a stronger Milan side that might even give us a repeat of the late 90s to the early 2000s European dominating side.
