AC Milan Women 1-0 Sampdoria: Ijeh’s second half goal makes it three wins in a row

After a difficult start to the season it would be fair to say that the AC Milan Women are on a bit of a roll as they beat Sampdoria over the weekend to make it three victories on the spit.

Milan secured a big victory the previous Sunday as they scored in the last minute to defeat Napoli away from home and continue a good recent run, with Chanté Dompig’s goal in the 92nd minute building on the Lazio victory that came inside the final 10 minutes back on 29 September.

The pressure was on to keep the momentum going and coach Bakker’s side put in another positive performance in which they played a smart brand of football, obtaining their third consecutive win in Serie A Femminile.

After a first half full of pressure and some chances wasted, in the 71st minute the Rossonere finally broke the deadlock. A pass from Ávila allowed space for Ijeh to shoot, and she managed to put it in the bottom corner with a curling shot.

The three points means that Bakker’s side are currently in fourth position on ten points, in the Poule Scudetto zone. Now they will look ahead to the next match, a big and important one against the reigning champions: scheduled for Sunday 20 October at 16:00 at home to Roma.

The coach’s reaction

Suzanne Bakker spoke to Milan TV after the victory against Sampdoria to assess what was another positive performance and result for her side.

“We are happy with the win, especially with the way we played. We dominated and created a lot of chances. Our possession was good and we created a lot, plus we scored and kept a clean sheet, I think they didn’t create any chances apart from at the end when they pushed a lot and put the ball in our area. I am happy with the result,” she said.

“When we scored the goal, we defended the 1-0 but we could have attacked to double it, it’s something we have to learn for the next game. We’re playing against Roma, we’re curious to see how it goes.

“The young players are doing very well. For me, age doesn’t matter, whether you’re 18 or 30, only your quality matters. We consider which players can help us win the match. Monica [Renzotti] and Nadine [Sorelli] were also starters last week, and Sara Stokic played too.

“But it’s not a question of individual players, today was a team performance. We celebrate as a team, all the players are important to us.”
