AC Milan Women: Newest signing Thorvaldsdottir reveals Champions League desires

By Steph Insixiengmay -

Berglind Björg Thorvaldsdottir has revealed her desire to help AC Milan qualify for the Women’s Champions League.

…But she’ll return home to Iceland during the summer.

She recently stated this during an interview with the Icelandic site Vísir.

Berglind Björg Thorvaldsdottir is also the first Icelandic player to score for Milan since Albert Guðmundsson, who last played for the Rossoneri in 1949.

A few excerpts from the interview:

On how she’s managing to integrate into the team and to get adjusted to playing for them in such a short amount of time:

“It’s been pretty good. I’m just getting into all of it slowly and soon, I will have a full understanding of everything.”

On her debut, and scoring a brace during her first game for the team:

“The feeling was very good […] I’m still getting used to wearing a jersey for this team, but it was really nice to have managed to break the ice immediately and to score goals during the first game.”

On her decision to play for Milan:

“I was contacted and asked if I was interested in this [playing for Milan]. I then went out a few days later to assess the situation. So I made the decision the day after I got home [from visiting the team].”

On the quality of the league:

“The quality here [in Serie A] is just fine. The league has gotten a lot better since I was last here, as the biggest clubs have stepped up and want to do well. The difference may be that the league at home [in Iceland] is more physical, but out here, there is more emphasis placed on technical ability and speed.”

Side-note: Berglind had previously played in Serie A with Hellas Verona, and that her experience with Verona wasn’t that great. So to have her compliment the league like this shows that she’s being sincere and that the league has taken a great leap in quality since the last time she played in it.

On playing for AC Milan, and having the announcement of her signing made on Milan’s Twitter page (which is followed by millions of people):

“Yes, I liked it a lot [the reception from the Milanisti after her signing]. Actually, I’m still catching up after the last few days. There is great interest in AC Milan from all around the world and it is a privilege to be in this position.”

On Champions League qualification:

“I just really like the future. Hopefully, I can help AC Milan secure a place in the Champions League next year.”

On the future:

“I will return to Iceland in May and play with Breidablik this summer.”

In the meanwhile, you can watch Berglind in action for the AC Milan Women. Most of the games are streamed live and for free on the AC Milan app.
