Official: AC Milan’s opponents for 2023-24 UCL group stages – Tonali returns to San Siro

AC Milan have found out their opponents for the 2023-24 Champions League group stages, and they have got a very tricky group.

Last season, Milan went on a memorable run to the semi-finals of the competition, beating Spurs and Napoli in the knockout stages before exiting at the hands of their city rivals Inter in the final four, who would go on and lose the final to Manchester City.

Milan were in Pot 1 last season after having won Serie A – getting drawn against Chelsea, Red Bull Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb – but they were in Pot 3 this time after finishing third in the league and that meant a tougher draw was likely.

In today’s draw in Monaco, Milan were put in Group F alongside Ligue 1 winner Paris Saint-Germain, Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund and Premier League side Newcastle United.

Pioli would of course have faith in his players no matter who the opponents were though, after a summer window that has so far yielded nine new signings and with a young core that are a year wiser, especially after last year’s run.

        1. Financially the final would be best. We need to buy a guaranteed goal scoring machine to replace Giroud (in a year or two).

But if we neglect the impact of getting far enough in the UCL I’d love to get the 2nd start before Inter. A trophy is a trophy. Just look at Inter’s trophy table to our trophy ROOM. LOL!

      1. could have been worse? We are in the group of death. VERY bad luck. Newcastle is BY FAR the best “4-seed”; because they haven’t collected any UEFA coefficient points in recent years so by the rules they’re a 4-seed; however, w/ the new Arab oil money PLUS just being in the richest league like the Premier League, they are LOADED with talent that they have bought in the past 18 months. This is NOT a normal 4-seed. We got very unlucky.

  1. What a joke this draw is. Milan always unlucky. But it’ll be great to watch. I seriously think we can beat all these teams with a healthy squad. Leao will explode!!!

  2. Group of Death, but this is what this competition is about. Hard to say how we will do, but even in the worst-case scenario if we crash out, we’ll be able to focus on what will surely by a title challenge. Most important is to do our best, represent the colors and qualify for next season’s edition again, to keep improving that coefficient so that we can get out of this damned Pot 3.

      1. Bro, is based on participation in Uefa competitions. We practically missed out on Europe for 8 years. That’s why our coefficient is low. The more often we qualify (which you have to do before you can talk about how you do IN the competitions), the more our coefficient goes up.

  3. This group looks hard on paper but I’m not sure it Is. PSG don’t look anything special albeit they have Mbappe. This is a test of Pioli now, we have a great squad to do well here and need to qualify

    1. PSG and Dortmund both are very inconsistent. Domestically and oh Europe. Newcastle is a mixed bag. Very winnable group just gotta bring our A game.

  4. One of the hardest group for sure, on paper. But some consideration :

PSG is on rebuild, they lost a lot of element from last season and overall I think they are a bit weaker.

Dortmund looked not as strong as recent years, but still tricky

Newcastle, well, strong team but not unbeatable.

Overall, I still fancy our chance to get out of this group to CL knock out stage, but it won’t be easy. Would love to watch all the matches, that’s for sure. Wouldn’t say so if we play against the likes of Crvena Vreda, Celtic, or Sociedad, for example.

    1. I agree mate. We look strong so far and the
Midfield (I’ll hold my hands up) looks imposing and capable of carrying the ball. Plus the front line is balanced and diverse.

None of those teams will relish facing Leao, Pulisic, Chukwueze or Okafor.

      1. Am just happy for this summer Mercato or else would be putting my hand in my head am not scared like I said earlier on the only team am scared of is mancity any other team we will overcome them

  5. Great group.
Great atmosphere in Dortmund and Newcastle, and playing vs FC Mbappe.
    Great storylines.
3 Milanisti coming to San Siro Gigio, Tonali, Mbappe.
    Theo vs his brother Lucas.
    Mbappe vs Calabria 🤣🤣🤣.
Every game will be joy to watch.
    Let’s go

          1. Lucas won’t play as LB as soon as Nuno Mendes is back from injury. He was so bad in the first 2 matches, that I think they might play someone else out of position until this guy is back from injury, just not to play him on LB ever again…

    1. True lol 😂. Once we get the stadium up and running we can divert some funds to the “special accommodations” account 😁

    1. The team that did nothing against a rotated and tired Man City and then following week lost to a liverpool team playing 10 men for 75 minutes?

This is the team people hype up? Really? lmao.

      1. Yes, those are really bad teams they played against. City is well known for not having the players to rotate and are generally bad. What?

        1. do you watch matches at all? City played the Super cup, they sold a lot of their players and didnt have enough to rotate the squad as usual, that was prime time to play against them

and funny how you ignore the Liverpool game because it doesnt fit your narrative that Newcastle is somehow a very strong team lmao

          1. First of all, your childish passive aggressive commenting is really special. You’re the king of passive aggressive here, I have not seen a single positive comment from you. Grow up, you can’t be a grumpy teenager forever.

And second, you are talking about the game where Newcastle had 25 or 30 shots on goal? Because I have watched the game and Liverpool was invisible for 60 minutes.

Like anyone here needs to ignore parts of what you write, I’m quite positive 99% of commenters here are intellectually superior to you. You flatter yourself too much…

          2. First of all, you never support Milan ever, you always downplay anything Milan does and overrate other teams

wtf kind of fan are you?

          3. Where did I do that? I won’t go into your childish discussions in which you make up things to make the other people look worse. You did it again, same thing. ” you never support Milan ever, you always downplay anything Milan does and overrate other teams”

Grow up, even if you are 30 you are a kid. Grow up.

          4. Says the guy typing like a 10 year old

literally never watches matches and overrates everything, the fact that you dont even know that Newcastle fails hard against high pressure matches and don’t have many good subs available is telling

Maybe try watching football instead of typing crap online, it’ll be better for you.

what a joke of a football fan, just here to cause random drama by trolling online

          5. Sure, you win! Keep whining and making things up. Have fun!

P.S. I have 6 comments here, wrote today. 😀 I love how you have a story for yourself to sound right. Enjoy it!

        2. LMAO @Tkoje my deepest apologies

Hope it doesn’t deter you from commenting here. You’ve made a valid point, City is the best team in Europe. No shame in losing 1-0 to that team tbh. Vs Liverpool Newcastle actually had more chances, failed to convert, Pool basically sucker punched them with those goals. It happens. Not sure if they’re the most dangerous team but they are a dangerous team to face.

Don’t know if you’ve seen, I’ve come to only engage with certain people. They make stuff up and generally it’s either their reading comprehension skills are not the best or they delight in projecting their mental gymnastics on to you, leaving you feeling like wth I didn’t say that. Or try to box you into some label. Don’t fall for these things.

These are the people I simply ignore Because its a serious waste of time and mental health: Giancarlo (though he seemed to be missing these days), Boulden, Pippo, and K is almost getting to be on that list. Lol

          1. I really don’t care. But this guy is trying to pick a fight with someone and isn’t on the level to keep it up with anyone so he has these standard statements. “You aren’t a fan” “You’re a troll” “Try watching football” and so on. You know you’re being attacked by someone that isn’t worth your time when they write something similar to that…I thought everyone here is probably a fan, but I guess I have to ask the SempreMilan Gestapo to verify someone as a fan. It is basically if you nod your head and agree with everything you are a fan, and if you don’t you aren’t. Genius!

        3. No worries bro. Lol if you disagree with them you get called names or insulted. It’s a shame really. They have issues, and I really mean that.

PS @Ibrahim Ba, there’s no way you could be on that list lololol 😂

      2. Uh, last time we play Chelsea we lost home and away horribly and they were… not even top 10 in PL. So not that easy to imagine.

But in Europe they are the underdog, imo.

      3. Chelsea was trash domestically last time they were in our group and look how that turned out. We struggle against the English. Hopefully we have enough quality this time around.

    2. Not necessarily. They just come back to Europe after more then 10 years, and in Europe the familiarity and experience play a lot. Remember our first season in Europe after banter era?

They have strong squad but little experience playing in Europe, and their coach also never coached teams in Europe.

They could be the surprise or disappointment of the group, that’s for sure.

But dmn it’s really hard to sent a message lol

  6. Nasty group, but could have been worse. Milan had a sweet draw last year and got to the semis despite being fairly crap, so I don’t know what people are moaning about in terms of “bad luck”.

  7. Difficult group, by far the most difficult of the Italian clubs, but we also can beat any/all of these teams.

The feeling among their fans will be this is more of a nightmare draw for Paris, Dortmund, & Newcastle than it is for Milan.

Last year was a nice but rather fortunate run in this competition. Now this year it’s time to strut our stuff and show how strong this retooled squad really is. We won’t fear having to go to Signal Iduna Park, the Parc de Princes, or St James’ Park. We are Milan.

  8. Exactly the group that I wanted. Never understood people who want a weak group. If you can’t go through a tough group you won’t win the whole thing anyway.

Time for the new players and Pioli to prove their worth against real teams, with world class players…

    1. Yes, but look at the financial side. You get Money with Wins in the Group stage an for going to the Last 16. i would liked an easier group. But we can win against all three Teams. I think all four Teams will steal the Points against each other. Maybe all Four Teams will have approx. The Same points after 6 games

      1. It is ok, anyone can think what they want. I think our defence can’t deal with PSG. People are saying only Mbappe and they have Dembele and Asensio + Ramos and a few more players. Barcola is signing today, top winger. I mean they will be the strongest in the group by far.

Milan can beat all of them but we’ll see, most of the new players need to step up a few levels above what they are used to and I hope to see that…

  9. PSG is PSG, Mbappe will be tough to deal with but other than that they arent even remotely as tough as Barca Madrid Bayern City etc

Dortmund also isnt as strong as last year, have a look at their opening matches, they dont look sharp and they just sold their best player in big games, before people bring up Tonali, LEAO IS OUR BEST PLAYER FFS.

Newcastle cant handle big games and this is the first time their manager will be facing midweek games, they arent that scary.

This is an overrated Group of death

  10. We avoided all the best teams yet still somehow ended up with the toughest group. I think Newcastle in Pot 4 was the killer, because they were by far the toughest team from that pot. PSG and Dortmund were decent options, in my opinion, and they are definitely beatable and we avoided the likes of Man City, Man United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, etc..

    1. No way you added Arsenal, Man United and Barça there. We will smack United pretty sure even Galatasary will beat them especially in home game, Barca looks weaker than last season and Arsenal NVM don’t even wanna talk about them.

  11. yeap i said it before, of course milan will be in 1 group with newcastle.
    totally set up and rigged.
i remember when milan draw madrid after kaka join madrid, or when man utd draw madrid after ronaldo join madrid.

and of course man city in the easiest group.

    but psg and dortmund.
i love this group, this is a chance to prove how far milan have change

  12. I’ve been saying this all summer, that we’re likely going to get a strong group and we might be looking at Thursdays if things go bad and if things go very well we’d make next round or if they go well we get dumped out of Europe at the group stage.

Not to take anything away from the US other teams but they are beatable. PSG is a little bit on the mend but have Mbappe, Dortmund is not like 2010s Dorts but they are quite formidable and Newcastle is going to be tough.

  13. I don’t know why but I am very excited. I think every teams have a some kind of chance to win it, let alone to progress. It is such a nice group that everyone could realistically take points from each other, rather than have 2 clear strong teams and 1 obvious feeder.

  14. In my opinion, Dortmund will be toughest. They have established coach and team. All other teams, including us, are in some phase of changes and rebuilds.

  15. Were the best team on paper here. PSG just started their rebuild, and BVB is one of the most overrated “top” teams. Our wingers easily beat fn Trippier and whoever the fk this Dan Burn random is.

  16. On paper we can beat any team but come match day, the ref will be giving non existing penalties and soft red cards against Milan

  17. Ac milan is ac milan, champions league is champions league
Pioli’s words last season when we were drawn napoli in the quarters

  18. Certainly tough group. All 3 are beatable, but yet strong teams. Great to watch. Definitely doable. Lets go boys.

  19. We had luck last year, draw wise, this one not so much. Dortmund has no Bellingham or Haaland, the club is always a threat though, but one we can handle. Not as concerned as past years given they are at the start of a new cycle. I don’t think we have a hugw gap that seperates us. Up for the taking

PSG is under constant reconstruction and fail often in Europe. They also aren’t dominant at the moment. Many departures, our club has a steadier profile. Most of our new players played together prior and our other mainstays have been here for years. Skill wise not sure how we stack up to them. Performance wise, I think we can compete on any given night if both clubs are healthy given the heavy turnover in staff.

Newcastle worries me most. Their direct approach can be problematic for us. They have added to their team well, their speed can be a problem. I don’t think they much better either.

Whichever team builds cohesion and performs on the night will take these ties home. It will be a toss up.

Should make for great games. Cautiously curious is how I would consider myself at the moment.

    1. We had luck, yes; but it was also luck we earned ourselves because as Scudetto winners, we were in Pot 1. (However, we didn’t draw the very best 4-seeded team last year like we did this year in Newcastle).
No matter what publication you look at (ESPN, TheAthletic.com, etc.), EVERY “expert” has picked our group as the toughest group (and it’s because Newcastle has the quality of a 2-seed and even borderline 1 -seed.

  20. It’s a very difficult group but I’m very sure we will qualify for the next round, A win in Sansiro against Dortmund And a loss in signal iduna park, draw H/A to PSG, a win in sansiro over Newcastle and a Draw castle

    1. This! But I’m not surprised. When Barcelona were in prime Messi time they also go handed easy draws. It’s all about having that one star studded side always in the knockouts. That or Guardiola gives good head.

  21. That is about the worst group possible to get, absolutely disaster IMO. Probably one of the strongest combinations possible, only Madrid instead of Dortmund would have made that worse.

  22. Qualifying from this group is very doable. I think this is the most balanced UCL group draw I’ve seen in a while. There’s no defacto classical “group of death”. Though our grou looks tough on paper though. Would say it’s kinda similar to last season.

And I mean, we drawing Newcastle just had to happen right. Looking forward to seeing Tonali back. Still bummed that he had to leave, just imagine a Tonali – Reindjers midfield..🔥 .would like to see how he fairs playing against Milan.

  23. This is a very challenging group but that means every Milan players needs to step up their game when Pioli give them a chance to play.

Really sad that we already meet Tonali again but he’s wearing different shirt 😔

  24. Indeed, it is not easy win for milan, but not unbeatable either. It just, all of the team in the group have the qualification for the next stage competition or getting direct ticket going home.

  25. Dortmund is NOT garbage. C’mon man. They’re in CL every year and they completely out played Chelsea in knockout stages last year and were very unlucky to get eliminated.
PSG and Newcastle are both rich and have bought a lot of talent. There is NO QUESTION that this group is very, very difficult (and by most “expert” accounts, the toughest).
Can we advance out of the group? Of course we can; but it will be very tough and require us to get very good results at home (at least 7 points at home if not all 9).
