Adli reacts after impressive first start: “I knew one day it would be my turn”

By Oliver Fisher -

Yacine Adli was without doubt one of the stars of the show as AC Milan came from behind to beat Cagliari 3-1 at the Unipol Domus last night.

The headlines leading up to the game were mostly about who would replace Rade Krunic at the base of the midfield three given the Bosnian is out injury for around four weeks, and Adli’s candidacy was put forward by many.

However, Stefano Pioli has often shown little trust in the Franco-Algerian as seen through the fact the last game he started prior to the Cagliari one was 346 days ago against Hellas Verona, and he came off at half-time in that.

Adli got his first start of the season and he impressed in the deep-lying playmaker role. After the game spoke to DAZN to reveal his emotions, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

How do you rate your performance?

“It wasn’t easy after a year without playing, I always prepared to play anyway. I tried to play with personality, I always had the trust of the coach and my team-mates. I tried to play as I know how, I didn’t invent anything. It went well and I’m happy.”

What work do you have to do in the non-possession phase?

“Since the beginning of the season I have changed roles, I have to work hard in the defensive phase too. The staff helps me a lot to learn these things. Today we knew that it was a team that could hurt us on the counter, I tried to give support to the defenders. I tried to recover the ball to help the defence.”

What were your feelings like before the game, knowing you were going to play?

“Nothing special. I was very happy to start as a starter. I tried to play as I know how to play, I didn’t force anything and it went well. I’m happy for the team, Milan is the most important thing.”

What is Adli’s story at Milan?

“I have always felt good in this group. I have always tried to always work and be available, I have always done it without giving up anything. I knew one day it would be my turn. I tried to show that I can help the team and I always will.”
