José María Gimenez is the new name in the frame as a potential defensive reinforcement for AC Milan, a report claims.
According to MilanVibes, Massimiliano Allegri’s has asked for a centre-back with international experience and Gimenez fits the bill. Negotiations with the player and his entourage are ongoing, concrete and ‘an agreement is very close’.

Meanwhile, work is underway with Atlético Madrid to try and agree a fee. His deal runs out in 2028 but he does not currently appear to be a big part of Diego Simeone’s plans.
Gimenez top of the list
The arrival of the Uruguay international would see him compete for a starting spot with Matteo Gabbia, and generally be an alternative in the rotations. His wages currently range between €4-5m net per year, likely to be reduced if he joins the Rossoneri.
All of this has a pre-requisite: Allegri’s continued tenure as Milan boss. The Tuscan coach had already put forward Gimenez as a name he deeply admired before the winter window, but despite mutual interest, nothing came of it.
This was due to Simeone’s desire to keep the structure intact until the end of the season and not lose such a key leader, and due to the lack of approval to proceed from the Milan management too.
The 31-year-old has made 25 appearances this season, with one goal and one assist, but less than 50% of his matches were as a starter. He has a role as a leader in the dressing room, but the feeling is that this summer he will call time on his 13-year spell at Atleti.
