AC Milan’s collapse continued at San Siro on Sunday night as they were beaten by Atalanta, putting top four at serious risk.
Wins for Juventus, Como and Roma earlier in the round really put the pressure on Milan to respond with a win of their own. Instead, they were three goals down after less than an hour, and only a couple of late goals spared the embarrassment of a hammering in the eventual 3-2 loss.

The result means that the gap to fifth place has now been completely eradicated. Roma are level on points while Juventus have jumped above the Rossoneri into third. Six points out of six are now needed to guarantee Champions League football.
An interesting picture
What is strange about the stat line is that it makes it look like Milan were on top of the game for large stretches. They had more possession, Expected Goals, double the big chances and double the shots.
However, most of that came in a final flurry towards the end in which a bit of respectability was added to the scoreline, but it resulted in zero points.
Relegation form
Since beating Inter in early March, Milan have earned 7 points in 8 games. In this period of approximately two months, Milan are fourth-last in the table.
Only Verona (2 points), Pisa (3), and Lecce (5) have done worse. The Rossoneri are just above them, along with Cagliari and Cremonese.
Who would be first in that bimonthly ranking? Inter and Juventus have 18 points each. Milan are 11 spots lower. Roma are third with 16, followed by Como, Lazio, Udinese and Torino with 14.
Allegri has earned the worst points haul from mid-season onwards in the last eight years, as MilanNews point out. At best he can match Gattuso’s in 2018-19, and surpass Pioli and Conceicao from recent years.

A rough run
Milan have now failed to win their last three Serie A matches (D1 L2), their longest run since a run of three between February and March last year.
The Rossoneri have also now failed to win any of their last six league matches against Atalanta (D2 L4), with this their second consecutive home defeat to La Dea.
After the 1-0 win on April 20th, 2025, Atalanta won back-to-back games on the road against Milan for the first time in Serie A since 1943 (three in a row in that case).
We replaced Pioli in the hope of improving quality, but the results have actually been worse. What’s different between the Pioli era and now?
Pioli won the league with a young exciting squad and then had it ripped from under him. He’s since admitted himself he’d lost the dressing room by the end, but this was only because he couldn’t get his new band of misfits to perform (and neither has anyone else). I’d have him back tomorrow.
Well… Pioli lost control due to Theo & co’s misbehavior and neither Fonseca or Conceicao did any better. So… Maybe Pioli wasn’t to blame at all and all that was needed was getting rid of the cancerous players.
Allegri doesn’t have that problem but the team still isn’t performing. That’s on Allegri though as the players are behaving better.
The XG in this game was interesting. They got 3 goals from 1.08 in chances. They were all soft goals conceded.
Milan’s XG was much higher at 1.93 despite being badly out played until the last 25 mins.
