Despite it being no different to recent performances, Milan’s failure to reach the Champions League against Cagliari is a massive blow. It just feels like what was an already known reality has become a proper one.

It’s the kind of situation where you know its true, but there’s a slight hope that somehow things are turned round. Yet, despite numerous chances, the Rossoneri have remained a poor side and are only to blame for their downfall this season.

The scoreline is really the only stat that matters normally. However, after such a dismal performance, you have to look at the others too. Of course, that is not to avoid the scoreline, but everyone knows it anyway and the damage which it has caused.

What stands out is the Rossoneri’s pitiful effort to win the game. Recording three shots on target from 16 isn’t great anyway. However, the fact that Cagliari – who again, had nothing to play for – managed more of both is worrying.

The fact that they had more possession too is just embarrassing, but you’d know that just from watching the performance.

Four without a win

The loss also cemented another unwanted situation. Milan have now matched a run from 2021, where they went four games at San Siro without a win. Considering the fact that they have only picked up a point in that time, too, it is not great.

You certainly wouldn’t be wrong to suggest that this record has massively hurt the Diavolo’s chances of getting a Champions League spot, that’s for sure.

Almost 30 year streak broken

Before Sunday’s game, Cagliari had not won at San Siro since June 1, 1997, at least against the Rossoneri. So, it is only natural that in a game where Milan needed to win, they felt charitable enough to end that streak.

It is not the first example of this recently, where a streak has been broken having stood for years. Again, another reason why the club won’t be playing amongst the European elites next season. A frustrating reality that was so avoidable.
