AC Milan failed to bounce back with a win on Saturday evening as Torino got to celebrate in front of their fans. As the overall stats of the clash show, the Rososneri should have done a lot more with the opportunity.
After the Champions League elimination, and Lazio as well as Bologna dropping points hours before, the fans were hoping for a reaction against Torino from Milan. Instead, it ended up being another painful 90 minutes, riddled with individual mistakes.
The situation in the standings is this complicated, to say the least, and it remains to be seen if next week can be more positive. For now, though, let’s take a look at some key stats and facts from the game.
Errors prove costly again
As the overall stats of the game show (see photo below), Milan not only dominated possession but also the xG, with 2.28 vs. Torino’s 0.36. Christian Pulisic’s missed penalty plays a big role here but it’s clear that many other good chances were missed as well.
To concede two goals from three shots on target is really frustrating, especially seeing as the first was the result of a huge mistake by Mike Maignan. In short, Milan need to do a whole lot better with what they are creating, as well as eliminate the stupid mistakes.

Thiaw equals own-goal record
While yesterday’s own-goal was completely Maignan’s fault, booting it straight at the defender when he could have put it out for a throw-in, Malick Thiaw still equalled a record as a result. In fact, he’s only the second Milan player to score two or more own-goals against the same team in one season.
Franco Baresi did it in the 1992-93 season against Pescara, but they came in the same game so perhaps what Thiaw did is even more ‘impressive’. It should also be noted that although yesterday’s own-goal was unlucky, he could have done better in the first leg.
Malick Thiaw is only the second player in #ACMilan history to score two own goals against a single team in a Serie A season after Franco Baresi, against Pescara, in 1992-93.

Worst tally in five seasons
Taking a look at Milan’s points tallies after 25 rounds in the last five seasons, this campaign is the worst for the Rossoneri with 41 points. A whopping 14 points behind the Scudetto season, albeit just one point behind the 2022-23 season.
That being said, the 2022-23 season was compensated for by the impressive run in the Champions League, reaching the semi-finals in the end. Now, they are struggling in the league AND have been knocked out of the UCL, which is far from good.

Pulisic’s impressive run ends
Prior to yesterday’s game, Pulisic had taken 12 penalties in his professional career, converting all of them for a 100% record. However, as a result of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s save, he missed his first one and stated earlier today that it has been ‘a very tough week’.
It was a very good save by the keeper, it must be said, but it’s also a miss that was very costly for Milan as they could have used a goal before the break. Not to mention that Pulisic nearly missed the penalty against Juve in the Supercoppa Italiana as well.
“Not to mention that Pulisic nearly missed the penalty against Juve in the Supercoppa Italiana as well”. Love how he adds this at the end. Same guy who always rates Pulisic low. Sorry but your best player over two years is American.
Doesn’t make it any less true! But you’re wrong about my thoughts, I do believe he’s one of our best and certainly the best this season
But why add that phrase? You could have said he buried a nice one his previous pk but you skipped over that one to make a negative statement about the one before that.
Examine your thoughts more carefully. Reread what you’ve written. You gave Felix a 6 yesterday for looking good. No matter the rating on Puli he always could have done more or he was lucky or … Some mitigating comment.
I don’t particularly care that he is US. It seems pretty obvious to most who frequent the comment section.
It’s okay to realize the bias and adapt. I hope you will take that time to reflect.
