Allegri blames mistakes and inability to ‘perceive danger’ for Milan’s defeat vs. Cremonese

After the disappointing defeat to Cremonese, AC Milan manager Max Allegri spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on what went wrong underneath the San Siro floodlights.

It was an incredibly poor performance from the Rossoneri, more or less from start to finish, and a lot of work will have to be done on the training ground next week. Rafael Leao’s absence isn’t a good excuse either, considering the quality of the opponents.

Speaking to DAZN in his post-match interview, as transcribed by MilanNews, Allegri discussed what went wrong for Milan, how they can improve and what the next steps are. He made it clear that the season is long and that they can’t just give up now.

What are your takeaways?

“If you look at the performance, we had a lot of shots on goal. The difference is made by our aggressive attacking and our defence: we could have been more careful, but fortunately we’re just starting out and we can work on it.”

Is Milan incomplete numerically?

“It makes no sense to evaluate the squad now. We’ve worked well so far and will continue to do so. In Serie A, you’ll find tough teams like Cremonese, who won without stealing anything. We made these two mistakes that led to the defeat. We need to be more aggressive when we don’t have the ball.”

How concerned are you about this lack of determination?

“It’s never easy, the first game is always tough, we’re not in top form. These are games where you can’t concede goals, and unfortunately, we did. We got back on track, then in the second half, we had potential chances where we could have scored.

“We didn’t, and we conceded this goal knowing they’re good crossers and would close down well in the box. We need to work on these situations; as I always say, we can’t concede two goals in a game.”

What didn’t you expect this evening?

“Given the goals we’ve conceded, where we need to improve, and haven’t yet, is the phase when… We don’t perceive the danger. We’re five against three in the box, and he can’t jump alone. Just as Pezzella can’t get the ball, he’s running at 300 miles an hour from a deep position. You have to perceive the danger; if you don’t perceive it, you can still concede.”

On Santiago Gimenez…

“He’s a bit behind in terms of fitness, but he worked hard, he did the best he could, then at the end he had a header that didn’t go his way. But it’s not a matter of Santiago, it’s a matter of all of us who must be responsible for when we play and prepare for matches in a certain way: we absolutely can’t concede goals like that.”

Napoli also lost their first match last year…

“Regardless of what happened last year, we have to see the positives among all the negatives. When we resume on Monday, we need to prepare well because we have Lecce, which is a difficult away game.

“We have to prepare to play dirty games too, because otherwise, if we play all our games cleanly, we can lose, win, and draw against anyone. That way, we won’t be solid. We had improved, but unfortunately, tonight we made these two mistakes.”

Lecce will be up next for Milan and that’s certainly a tough away clash. Kick-off is scheduled for Friday evening and the Rossoneru loanee Francesco Camarda could be playing from start, as he did against Genoa earlier today.

    1. This. They were absolutely horrible and didn’t deserve the full 90 mins. Wasteful and horrible. Ruined many good attacks.

  1. Sure, keep playing cheek and fofana. Hell, I miss krunic when I see these 2 mules play. I never thought I’d say that.

  2. What a disastrous start. Dealing with Allegri’s miserable face on the sidelines is one thing, but enduring the team’s leaky defense, Santi Giménez’s blunders up front, and the midfield’s mistakes is another. Worst of all was putting up with the gutlessness of the coach. Despite all the hype around signing Ricci and Jashari, we were forced to tolerate two idiots like Loftus-Cheek and, even worse, Fofana in the lineup for 90 minutes. Truly pathetic.

  3. Personally disappointed and surprised not to see Ricci. He’s the one who can anchor the mid. Considering he’s doing so well in pre season too. We can’t with both RLC and Fofana.

  4. Pavlovic despite the goal is a fawking horrible defender man. Clueless. Fofana and RLC should have been sold this summer. Sigh.

  5. The reason for RLC and Fonfana playing 90min is just a hope something good will happen which will help us to offload these players. God help us with the defense.

  6. There was no other end result when you willingly choose to start fofana and rlc in any match. Two of the laziest midfielders in the league. Rlc literally watches his man run in to score the first goal and does nothing… Why tf wasn’t Ricci playing, why didnt jashari come in sooner? Boniface deal about to be sealed tomorrow after that display from santi. Pavlovic once again somehow being the only decent attacking threat on the pitch. Might as well play him up top at this point. Pulisic playing like he does with his national team, pervis only redeeming himself with the assist. Salamaekers is alone with pav and modric as the only ones making a real difference, always trying. I better not see fofana and rlc start next match. Rlc should’ve been sold immediately to begin with. Gimenez needs to be benched to make him realize he’s gotta get his head in straight, the competition will hopefully make him try harder, because he was a traffic cone today

  7. Alegri its your mistake with formation and players. You are cowered to put new players to play.
You will do that at Lecce but again we will not win. You just dont know how take best from players, like Pioli,Conte or Gasperini knowes.
Also you probably do this to bring Vlahovic and Rabiot here, but they also not help you take champions league next year. You dont have vision how do that with those lazy players and disaster owners.
Some think its just 1st game, but no, we not improve at all at eny from last season. Its imposible with you, without quality new players and with those managment.

  8. Omongan pelatih bodoh, pelatih tidak berkualitas, meremehkan lawan, coba-coba taktik 3-5-2, memalukan sekelas Milan kalah SM tim promosi, manajemen yg bodoh, lambat dalam bernegosiasi, manajemen yg pelit mengeluarkan dana besar dan revolusi pemilik sekarang juga. Alegri nasib sama seperti pelatih-pelatih sebelumnya di pecat.

  9. Chill. This falls in line with my expectation.

From the day on he was signed, I knew what he can bring on to the club and what he’s not good at.

The club brought him mainly for PR. And that in top mgnt mind, think they can secure top 6..

After the 1st game display, I don’t have anything said about him for the next 6-8 games ( until he lose all 7 seven games in a row, nearly not possible)
So nothing bad to say about him from me. Completely normal

    1. His record suggest otherwise. It was a bad start. Nothing more. Leao getting injured had a big impact as the plan was for him to play as striker. Allegri isn’t stupid, he won’t tolerate bad performances.

  10. The Jinx of 433 continues… maybe this is BIG BOSS favorite but Milan will lose games

    Milan cannot use 433…

    442, 352, 4312
    Twin striker is Milan DNA

    1. I think we had a lot bad luck. Cheek and Fofana should be sold. Jashari and Ricci need playing time even with the assumption that they will make mistakes. In defence we need to quickly integrate de winter or someone else. We also need a striker, gimenez is not what we need,he is not a true striker, he has never been. Allegri is a good coach, but he is doing all the best with a team that was measerable last season. Let’s not forget that milan squad is not in top 4 squads, only allegri can make miracles.

  11. Milan will concede silly goals with Pavlovic, Tomori and Gabbia as our central defenders. They are all error prone with limited quality on the ball.

Paavlovic gave the opponent their first with poor pass and also gave the corner that resulted to the goal poor clearance. Then he and the other defenders can’t defend simple crosses too bad.

Those that signed Pavlovic, Fofana , Gimenez and Estupian really failed Milan. Players that don’t have easterly of the ball can’t be in Milan

  12. So many things changed and basically we are now depending on pavlovic to defend, go forward, make passes, dribble, score goals, defend again.

  13. You can mention all thebplayers as being poor but the truth is this loss is all about the coach. I often wonder why fans see something and coaches dont. For example, how can you leave RLC and Fofana for 90mins and take out Modric? Instead of bringing Ricci and Jashari to replace them you bring on Chuks. Those two should never play together again other wise we will continue to lose. Fofana and Loftus should never play together not even in training. The coach lost the match from beginning.

  14. In all of my life of watching Milan this is the worst opener I’ve ever seen
    This is straight-up sabotage
He needs to be sacked immediately
Playing RLC and Fofana when we just bought Jashari and Ricci is indefensible
So is continuing with Tomori, Pavlovic, Sale and other fodders like that

    This is worse than Giampaolo
    It’s that bad

  15. The coach only used fofana and RLC because of their size and not footballing sense. In the middle the coach should play Ricci, Jashari and Modric. Milan need right wing defender and a central defender as well.

    1. All of them most definitely go. All all alll specifically Allegri. The most useless coach in Italy. No club most appoints him

  16. if we play with fofana – loftus in midfield we lose every game we play should play ricci-jashari-modric midfield gimenez play better for sure

  17. Selling Okafor was a big mistake but the management need the money anyways.

And most of you here still want Chukwueze out.

Only Leao was injured and the bench seems Empty. Imagine if Pulisic and Leao were to be injured

Who will be the ball carrier and attacking threat ?

  18. Milan had 63% of the possession, 15 shots, 6 on target vs Crem’s 4 shots with 3 on target and 2 goals…9 corners vs 2….That’s a math calculation by the way. Solving it will tell you where the problem is. shhhh, I’ll give you a hint… the answer is not midfield!!! oh, and it’s not Musah or Emerson Royale!

  19. I’ve never had any real belief in Allegri, even after 2012. Bring in his time at Juve and all, And I still don’t
