GdS: Allegri’s ghosts and unluckiness – Milan in ‘free fall’ after Udinese defeat

The loss to Udinese was the third suffered by AC Milan in four games. An unsustainable issue that needs fixing. If it’s not, there will be issues

Throughout this season, Massimiliano Allegri has focused on the Champions League. Even when the Scudetto was a faint possibility, he instead looked at the numbers required for a return to Europe’s top competition.

Now, the numbers must be studied. Instead of it being done confidently, though, it is done with anxiety of a potential drop. Indeed, Milan are in free fall and they must find something to stop it. If they do not, all the talk of the Champions League will be rendered useless.

Milan’s recent struggles

Gazzetta dello Sport starts with names of the past, Osvaldo from 2008 and Nainggolan from 2019. Ghosts from previous failures and they could be added to this season.

Everyone around the Rossoneri is fearing a repeat of these incidents, despite the Scudetto being the dream after March’s win against Inter. Four of the last seven games have been defeats, which is bad enough. So, three in their last four is tragic.

How has it got to this point, though?

Well, there are issues everywhere. There is an element of being unlucky, look at Davide Bartesaghi’s deflection or the save by Okoye. However, it does not change the fact that the Diavolo deserved to lose to the Bianconeri.

The defence concedes again, and heavily, whilst the attack can neither compensate for the leakiness or counteract it at all.

Allegri will be seeing his own ghosts. In 2024, he only won two of his final 15 games and whilst it is not so bad in Milano, it is unavoidable to suggest that it is possible.

If his team were to fall at the last hurdle, despite his focus on the competition all season, it would be a severe problem. Yet, Milan and Allegri are staring that reality in the face, the gap has shortened and they are doing nothing to prevent that.

  1. “In 2024, he only won two of his final 15 games”

But he’s a six time scudetto winner! That can’t be right if you ask his fanatics. He’s faaar better than that. Oh right, it must have been the Juve-fans asking him to change the formation and that’s why they didn’t win more than 2. 🤦‍♂️
