GdS: A chance for the present and future – Allegri opts for Jashari to replace Modric

Ardon Jashari is a candidate to become the new AC Milan regista, a role that usually went to Luka Modric.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport recall, Jashari ended up being a mere extra this season after his big-money arrival from Club Brugge. He has played just 487 minutes in the league, spread across 11 games, including just four as a starter.

The moment to try and carve out a starring role comes now, in the season’s grand finale: the former Brugge star will step into the centre of the pitch for Milan in an attempt to keep the game flowing, with Modric out for the season.

The baton should be passed to Jashari, whom Allegri considers a deep-lying midfielder and not a box-to-box man. Ardon will have to accelerate to prove himself worthy of the job and because the team’s goal – qualification for the Champions League – is close but still needs to be achieved.

A tough year one

The future is at stake: Milan are seeking a European resurgence, and Jashari must climb the midfield hierarchy. Even if Modric decides to stay another year, he won’t be able to keep up this season’s pace and so Jashari would get more starts.

The Swiss must demonstrate that he’s taken advantage of his apprenticeship at Milanello. At 23 and after a season that began with a fractured fibula, Jashari has done little. With him in the starting lineup, Milan have won only once so far: at home against Lecce.

Jashari is more likely than Samuele Ricci, who remains in the running. What’s certain is that while the former Torino player’s reliability has been tested, it remains to be seen what kind of potential Jashari has, acquired last summer from Club Brugge for nearly €40m.

The second-highest-paid signing of the summer, after Nkunku, an investment carefully considered and pursued for months of negotiations between Milan and Club Brugge. From Belgium to the tactical intricacies of Serie A and the pressure of San Siro, the leap was a challenging one.

It was Ardon himself who wanted Milan more than the other European clubs who had come forward. Now he’ll have the chance to show it was the right decision, for all involved.

  1. Makes better sense to slot him into that space than Ricci. Hope he grabs the opportunity with both hands. I have a good feeling about him.
