Giovanni Malagò is looking increasingly likely to be the man who will lead Italian football into a new era as the incoming president.

As La Repubblica (via MilanPress) write this morning, Malago’s candidacy hasn’t even yet been officially announced, but it’s close. He stated that he will make up his mind next week, but everything suggests he’ll be running for the presidency of the FIGC.

He first gained the support of Lega Serie A as almost every single club voted in favour of the candidate proposed by Beppe Marotta. Then, the AIC and AIAC also gave their approval.

Malagò’s program

The paper explains the main points that are needed as part of the overhaul of Italian football, following the crisis that ensued after failing to qualify for the World Cup for a third consecutive addition.

More youth development programs are wanted with rules to encourage the use of young players, facilities, such second teams and regulatory reform. There could even be a reduction in the size of Serie A.

The goal? To bring the magic of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics to football, which Malago was in charge of. And the names? He will do everything he can to convince Paolo Maldini to join the new Club Italia, the structure governing all national teams.

Another name proposed by the newspaper is Demetrio Albertini. On the management side, it’s certain that the former CONI chief also wants a woman, though the name is still top secret.

As for the next national team coach, the choice will be collegial and will also be made within budget constraints, as the new coach’s salary won’t exceed €2-3m. The figures under discussion are Massimiliano Allegri and Antonio Conte, while Stefano Pioli is also not ruled out.
