Allegri refuses to blame Milan players after Cagliari disaster: “I don’t know how to find the reason”

Massimiliano Allegri does not put any blame on the players for AC Milan’s shocking collapse to miss out on the top four.

Milan went into the game against Cagliari to close out 2025-26 knowing a win would secure their Champions League spot. The Sardinian side prevailed 1-2 at San Siro which was a bad enough shock, but as it turned out – because of other results – a draw would have been enough to get in.

The catastrophic night means that the Rossoneri dropped from third at the start of the day to sixth position, and will have to make do with a Europa League spot. Allegri’s future will now be called into question, as will that of the entire management and squad

Allegri spoke to DAZN after the disastrous defeat against Cagliari, one which will cost Milan a lot in terms of money and prestige. His comments were relayed by MilanNews.

How is this result possible? Juve drew, a draw tonight would have been enough…

“Unfortunately, we can’t change the result. When you lose five games at home, we deserved the position we’re in. The game started well, we relaxed and thought we’d achieved the result.

“We defended very poorly as a team, but I have to say that I have absolutely nothing to reproach the lads for. We did everything we could to get into the Champions League.”

Without the Champions League, will your future change?

“Right now, I’m disappointed and angry. We’ve been left out of the Champions League. After we got it back on track against Genoa, no one would have expected such a defeat. Unfortunately, in football and sport, we have to accept it, reluctantly and with great bitterness.

“We have to evaluate the entire year as it has been. I have absolutely nothing to reproach the lads for, they’ve shown what they had on the pitch all year.”

Since the derby, Milan have lost six games. What do you think could be the reason for all these defeats?

“I don’t know how to find the reason. We made a mistake, I made a mistake. We had gotten it back on track. When you make end-of-year assessments, it’s normal for the results to sway your opinion one way or the other. We’ll have to be very clear-headed in evaluating the year.”

Today, there was a complete lack of determination. The goals we conceded were completely avoidable…

“The nerves definitely played a big part in this match. We were too passive in our goals, that had never happened before. We had done better in Genoa, it had been a more nervous game, and today we just couldn’t manage that.”

What’s missing for Milan to become a strong club again? Will there be further meetings in the coming days regarding the club’s future?

“I don’t know. Right now, my thoughts are only on the result we didn’t achieve. Then we’ll have to evaluate the entire year. Mistakes were made on every level, but right now, there’s absolutely no point in talking about it.”

    1. Allegri: “slow, boring, defensive is my style play. We defend against small team, we win by luck”.

    2. Allegri: “slow, boring, defensive is my style of play. We defend against small team, we win by luck”.

  1. everyone could have expected this because you are a dinosaur living in the past. You have no ability to adapt. You and RedBird need to go. If that falls short then bring back Maldini at a minimum. Losers. I’m sick of watching you you every single week.

  2. cardinale, scaroni, furlani

    ibrahimovic, kirovski

    allegri, tare

moncada should maybe stay and work as a scout once again

  3. I also won’t blame the players. It’s like doordashing in a corvette. Not really a good analogy but these players are good enough for top 4. To think that we didn’t play in Europe this season and still didn’t get top 4?

There’s a 35 page document probably sitting in a trash somewhere prepared by you know who… Maybe Cardinale should go find it and at least see what that person’s plan was to get us winning the UCL in about 3 years.

I honestly don’t know what to say. I knew something was wrong when Allegri said he doesn’t know how he would use a player the club signed for almost 40m. I can’t put the whole blame on the coach, I just know that if you’ve chosen Allegri as the coach then you should be prepared to back him with whatever kind of players he needs. First we hear there’s no money for a striker so they go and get Fulkrug then 35m suddenly appears for Mateta? A management that’s not even on the same page.

How did we fall this far after winning the Scudetto? 🤦🏾‍♂️

    1. I can put the whole blame on the coach. Did you see how we performed? The dreaded 3 5 2 against teams in the bottom half. Let’s not forget cremonese, Parma twice, udinese, sassuolo. The fact that over 70% of our games we had less possession and less than 40% in some games. The constant 11 behind the ball and doing nothing with it. It was the only year of my life supporting milan that I fell asleep during the games or tended to lose focus. ALL BLAME GOES TO ALLEGRI BECAUSE THE TEAM ON PAPER WAS DEFINITELY GOOD ENOUGH FOR TOP 4. Allegri is the most over rated coach in serie a history. First stint with Milan he had the best team and pushed out all the best players and the banter era began. At juve he came in and took over contes dream team and ended up poisoning them and look where they are today so who could think he could rebuild this team now? Te only success hell ever find is if he goes to a team of superstars like at Madrid. He needs to be the first one gone.

  4. Allegri is good

He is not responsible for.players achievements

They only shouldn’t concede a goal tonight, and they couldn’t

Its obviously problem in their brain and mentality. They crack in pressure

To win we need Leao Pulisic Allegri and fresh blood.

    We will.manage !!!

    1. You had Leao, Pulisic and Allegri, what did you win? Couldn’t even win at home most of the season

    2. You know nothing about football if you can say Allegri is not to blame. The whole season he messed up the players in a system that didn’t suit the players we have and yet he was reluctant to change. He kept playing Leao and Pulisic as center forwards 8n a 3-5-2 system which even himself didn’t master. Losing to all the small teams like that at home. Any good coach would try to secure their spot in the last game at home by choosing the best players they have.

    3. Your comments are always off.
Sometimes I wonder if you really support milan or you are a disguise merda fan.

  5. Allegri is an outdated coach, football has moved on from allegris game plan. Allegri played the same tactics against all teams in serie a, playing a defensive game against teams That are not in Milan’s level. Allegri always defend and hoping to counterattack his opponent and that tactics can only work on teams that dominate. Allegri is the major problem of this team. Imagine playing a game in week and Allegri still fail to make it to top 4. Sack Allegri immediately

  6. No my friends, you loosers.

You dont see bigger brighter picture.

Allegri is – man who put Milan in position to reach result.

Leao and Pulisic – are two players who made first big step in it.

Who will be sold and who will be fired ?

Thats the best part of this season.

But i bet these 3 mentioned clowns ate going to stay in club.

    1. If you look at the players and consider this is Serie A and not EPL and you watch us play then yes sure you can choose to blame 20 players and everyone else or blame the one responsible for this dreadful football style and also responsible to get the most from the players he has.

Even if we won the league, I really can’t stand this type of football. I think we are lucky he lost so now comes change.

  7. I think that this team overachieved massively in the first half of the season.
It is not normal to concede in the way they conceded two goals tonight

  8. I am glad that happened, so we can begin from scratch and avoiding shameful session next year. Also, I didn’t see Milan spirit on current players especially Leo, managements, owners, and coach.

    1. shameful season might still happen. gerry has a lot to do. clean the house, appoint proper people. I just dont trust the guy. he proved over the years he has no clue about football. it could and im afraid it will get worse. but maybe it will forse dumb ass to sell. will see

  9. Allegri is not a coach Acmilan should bring back Maldini, Stefano Pioli or Vincenzo Italiano that’s the only thing Cardinale can do at this moment

  10. How can I blame Players when U the coach who create this amateur Milan, play so bad, no pressing, gol backward, no urgency, slow tempo, no creativity. No brain coach

  11. In the beginning yes Allegri was good. He never changed his Philosophy regardless of many bad results. Last season in my opinion wasn’t as bad considering we made 2 finals and was playing UCL. we weren’t in title contention at all. You know how bad of a coach you have to be to drop out of a title race in less than 2 months when you were top of the league majority of it. In the end we ended 7 points better than last season. It’s improvement and disappointment considering we played less games compared to last season. Not to mention how we closed the season in typical fashion that we started a lost against a weaker opponent. Mind last year we drew and won Cagliari last season. Last season we had more fights than this.

    1. Yes, but how come that can be coaches fault ?

      What happened last year ?

Players happened last year. The same situation like this year.

What was the point to make 3 different coach last year when players were doing last word jn team.

Same happened this year. They stopped with production.

      And thats all.

To have delivery you must have as much as possible players who do it in every week game.

      1. You must be an Allegri’s son
Because I don’t understand how you consistently defend him game-in, game-out when it is obvious he is way below average.

  12. Strategically, this statement can be interpreted on two levels:

Arranging the legal and financial groundwork for his departure: Allegri understands that his dismissal is imminent. By taking full responsibility and exonerating the players, he closes the door on the management using “player shortcomings” as a pretext to burden him with some of the financial losses. He thus ensures a dignified exit, receiving his full dues or financial settlement without engaging in legal battles over “negligence.”

A symbolic declaration of the project’s end: This statement is the final nail in the coffin for the current squad. When the coach reaches the conclusion that there’s no point in blaming his players after failing to qualify for the Champions League, it signifies his conviction that this group has reached its “mental and technical limit” under his leadership, and that any attempt to rectify the situation with motivational speeches has failed.

  13. No allegri, you DIDNT do everything you couldve to get ucl spots. Because that would imply you actually CHANGED SOMETHING WHEN IT DIDNT WORK ALL SEASON!!!! But you didnt, you kept insisting on the same brain dead tactic and the same abysmal lineup selections, and God awful game management, and pitiful player training. With the exceptions of Pavlovic and Bartesaghi, every single player in this squad has regressed from the level they played at last season. Every. Single. One… that is pathetic. Just leave

  14. Such a pathetic end to the season.
10 points in the last 10 games that followed the derby.
    L,W,L,L,W,D,L,L,W,L

We have zero potency in attack in these games, where we started just 7 points behind Inter in second.
We have scored 9 goals and conceded 15. The goals came were from:
    Pavlovic
    Rabiot
    Fofana
    Rabiot
    Pavlovic
    Nkunku (P)
    Nkunku (P)
    Athekame
    Saelemaekers

A pathetic contribution from the actual forwards.

I know Allegri wasn’t given some of the squad choices he wanted. But he has been incapable of creating a plan B or any real cohesion in attack.

Relying on a solid defence and then moments of individual skill in attack/midfield or set piece headers to scrape wins.
When the defence confidence broke, everything else has collapsed.

Whilst 352 solved some problems in defence (for a while), we just don’t have the wingers and strikers suited to the formation.
And Allegri was never able to pivot and come up with a new plan. The one time he tried (Udinese) he still
    – put Leao in the middle of a 433
    – put Saelemaekers at RW & Pulisic at LW
    – and left Tomori (our best CB in a 2 man defence) out of the line-up

So it was a switch to 433 doomed to fail because you still had square pegs in round holes.

Any time a team plays with an ultra defensive strategy you are always just a few bad results from in all imploding and looking awful.

  15. You reap what you sow.. an average at best squad
and you bring in an outdated coward of a manager, playing one match a week he couldn’t build a team nor a style.
The team can’t make few passes and create a single decent chance against relegation sides.
Congrats to all of us. Arrivederci.

    1. You are using the same formation is not working you can’t change it the coach used rough players
      At the right time

  16. Allegri won’t bite the hand that feeds him by saying the club has mediocre players that aren’t ready or good enough to play at a high international level.

Saying the effort was there, mistakes were made and they were unlucky is the polite equivalent of they aren’t good enough, as well as “this is as good as it gets with this bunch they gave me”. They fell short because face the fact, this is a poorly built team.

Waited all summer for Jashari, he wasn’t ready for pre season, got injured so they could save 5 million euros, well done, that put his lights out for the year, possibly his time with us because he will be under more pressure than he should have if he got here on time to be ready before high intensity training.

This team is better suited for Europa League and they can build a roster now with players having games to gel and learn how to play together if they buy players ready to come full swing at pre season.

  17. Allegri also could take responsibility. it was big chance for winning the league. even no one expected that we had finished season behind top 4. it’s difficult to explain how it was happened. sth wrong with physical preparing of the team or their mental.
    .
who could be blame if no players. don Allegri? or fatal mercato twice? in Juventus the same story. I think both teams achieved almost deep knock out in this season. especially Milan.
    .
time to make decisions. who will stay and who will fight for better results, for a respect to this club.

  18. So much for bringing in Goretzka, Lewendowski Gancalo or anyone else high caliber. Leao has been gone for 2 months already. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mangian, Pavlo, and Pulisic leave too. The fallout is gonna be nuclear.

    1. Goretzka isn’t the catch people think he is. We need fantasy, like Bernardo Silva. Lewandowski is too old.

  19. Basically Allegri is done with this group and is out the door. Which is an ominous declaration that this is a weak group not capable of more than what it has achieved. They buckle under/after the first goal or sign of pressure and are incapable of lifting themselves up and out. And there isn’t a da*n thing Allegri was able to do about it.

  20. If Allegri stays at Milan, and knowing Cardinale’s ignorance, he probably will, then that’s it for me. I won’t watch another Milan match until CARDINALE finally leaves!!!

  21. 1. The season we were outplayed by majority of teams take into account procession and Xg.
    2. Strong defense was achieved by magnificent Maignain performance but not defenders
    3. Attack was personality and good luck ( games vs Inter,Roma, Como, Atalanta, Lazio)
    4. Our tactics low block and counterattack

This is not characteristic of CL team
We can blame management but them main responsibility on this guy who cannot manage to adopt and change tactics for this must win game

    1. Wake up man. Cardinale is not going to spend money, he has no motivation to. He will sell the top guys to balance the books and stay “profitable”. Keep dreaming.

  23. This is really a disaster for Milan fan base as a whole …… Allegri is a blockhead coach cos how can you stick to formation that isn’t working with the Milan players 🥲🥲

  24. Allegri came here to destroy the club and mission accomplished. He can now go and do the same for Napoli.

  25. The comments of a doomed coach! This clown had only one job this season; to get Champions League football and he failed.
Rebuilding starts from the top; A new coach will be needed and fast! Our young talents will need to be integrated next season so we will need a proper man-manager to move us forward. Clear out all the deadwood at the top end of management and realise some of the assets we have, Leao, Tomori, Loftus-Cheek, Fofana etc.
Oh and Gerry needs to get on his knees and beg Maldini to come back as this club has lost its soul and identity …
