MN: Alvarez and Fernandez guide Argentina to World Cup final – Milan held talks over both

By Oliver Fisher -

Two of Argentina’s young stars will represent their country at the World Cup final on Sunday, and they could well have done so as AC Milan players.

One of the big reasons that Argentina are on the cusp of glory is thanks to the goal scoring exploits of Julian Alvarez, who has netted four times in the six games that he has been part of at the tournament so far.

Meanwhile, Enzo Fernandez has been a breath of fresh air in the midfield as he scored a very important group stage goal and looks a player well beyond his 21 years of age in terms of confidence.

As Pietro Mazzara of MilanNews writes, the Manchester City striker and the Benfica midfielder were both followed by Milan when they were at River Plate, and the Rossoneri were in talks over a deal for both albeit in summer 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Geoffrey Moncada had watched the duo in action and thought they could be an ideal fit for Milan, but nonetheless other choices were made.

  1. I understand why Alvarez didn’t happen, but surely we could have gotten Fernandez. It doesn’t make sense that Benfica beat us to him because we wanted Sanchez so badly. BTW, how is Sanchez doing now?

  2. Morocco team has a good midfielder Azzedine Ounahi number (8 Jersey). He is top talent and affordable. I wish we get him to fix our midfield problems in pacy, vision, mobility and creativity

    1. “Maldini transfer plans sucks!!!”

Oh sure, and also Theo Hernandez, Mike Maignan, Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu, Ismael Bennacer, Rafael Leão, they all suck!!!

It’s incredible the level of stupidity one has to endure on the internet nowadays…

    1. Alvarez = Milan vs City at 2021. Its obvious which one the player will choose.

Enzo Fernández = he already had agreement with Benfica when Moncada approach.

      1. Alvarez signed for ManCity in 2022 , even after it was already known that ManCity has an agreement to sign Haaland. So he would rather be a back up than a starter at Milan.
Enzo didn’t have an agreement with Benfica when Moncada approached him. Why would Moncada push Maldini to go after Enzo instead of Renato Sanches if he was told the deal with Benfica was done.
We don’t have to make up stuff to excuse mistakes and make ourselves feel better.
Maldini made the wrong choice on Enzo and his charm isn’t that good to persuade players not named Theo to sign for Milan instead of other big clubs.
“When Maldini calls” only worked on Theo, the other players rather play for Mid-table Bundesliga clubs, stay with their current clubs or like Thauvin who chose as a free agent to rather play in Mexico than be Milan’s starting RW.
People wanna give Maldini credit for Tomori, but they forget that Maldini botched the negotiations for Simakan over 2 mil( money that he had available by his administration). So instead of buying Simakan for 15 he bought Tomori for 30 mil.
And Tomori was their 5th choice after Simakan turned them down along with Todibo, Kabak, Christensen and Joakim Andersen.

  3. Lol, people are quick to criticize about these ‘missing opportunities’, however, how about those we did sign like Theo who is clearly lighting it up at World Cup, or Leao, Maignan, Tonali, Kalulu etc? Heck, even Giroud proved to be such a shrewd investment despite his age.

Other teams looked at us with envy with how we can unearth new talents with fractions of the cost. But of course for some of you, the grass would always be greener on the other side.

We can’t win them all, we can’t sign them all, that is the fact. Always was, always will be.

      Couldn’t agree more.

And when it comes to CDK, let’s be fvckin patient, for Chrissake… he won’t be the first or last example of a player that takes some time to flourish in a new environment.
