‘Neither good in defence nor in attack’ – Ambrosini critical of Milan midfielder

Former AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini picked out a couple of aspects – or rather a couple of players – that left him unimpressed during the 2-2 draw against Torino to begin the season.

Milan’s 2024-25 Serie A season began in a dramatic way as they battled from two goals behind to salvage a point against Paolo Vanoli’s Torino side, who had executed a perfect game plan up until the closing moments.

The first Torino goal came in bizarre circumstances as Malick Thiaw failed to clear a ball off the line, while Duvan Zapata got the second for the Granata with a header from deep inside the box after Thiaw let him go.

The substitutions injected life as Alvaro Morata opened his account for the Diavolo with an instinctive finish, and then Noah Okafor thumped in a volley in added time to complete the comeback and earn a draw.

Ambrosini covered the game as a pundit for DAZN and at full-time he offered his assessments after what was a rollercoaster match and he began by commenting on Loftus-Cheek, with his comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“Today Loftus-Cheek had little impact as a midfielder, he was neither good in defence nor in attack. Moved further forward he could perhaps be more incisive.”

Then, he went on to talk about Luka Jovic’s role as he struggled to get involved in the game. With Alvaro Morata and Noah Okafor scoring off the bench, the hierarchies might be reviewed.

“Very skilled inside the penalty area, he also has the ability to come forward to play. This evening he gave the impression of having adapted to the so-so pace of Milan’s first half.

“He would have had a big impact at the end, as Okafor did. He is much more skilled at managing that type of situation from the start of the match.”

  1. Think it’s too late to sell and replace this window but it’s something to consider next summer. Adli and Pobega need to go that’s obvious.

For all the talk of Bennacer leaving to bring in sizeable funds I always thought we could sell an Englishman back to the PL, either RLC or Tomori or both. Thing is we don’t have good CBs coming through to replace Tomori

RLC isn’t outright first choice, so if someone like Zeroli is promising enough by 2025, we might be able to offload the former Chelsea midfielder for €20-25mn and the squad still have reasonable options in midfield.

    1. There’s 13 days left be for the transfer window closes. LOL. We have enough time to get rid of these players and bring in new ones. Smh

      1. RLC was good, drove the ball forward and set up Leao for what should have been a goal. Replace Benancer with Musah or Reijnders.

  2. AmbrosinI amongst others should have more input and I remember him well as a midfielder rolls Royce player.

When we talk regards players fault coaches fault it’s very easy to forget it’s the management group who call the shots back in ambrosini day we had experts in recruitment as well as other areas now however I don’t believe we do.

A very easy example is how many of our starting 11 would get into other top teams today?
Back in the day of course a majority also I see ibra is still talking I wonder what prime Ibra would make of this Ac milan also what would this management make of ibra if he was available in his prime?

  3. Annoying player. Invisible, then he does something and you start thinking he got into the game finally, then Invisible again, the he does something, and Invisible again and the game is over adn you’re trying to figure out what was he doing for 90min because you can’t remember

  4. Think we should keep Adli. If pulisic and RLC both fail in the hole, which could happen, adli would be useful to play there as he’s our only player with real vision and creativity

    1. RLC is well….RLC.

This is why teams have up on him and why he cannot make the national team and why he was available for 16M when we bought him – because he is vastly INCONSISTENT.

Dominant one game; invisible/zero impact the next 4.

We should not be surprised. BUT this is what you get when you are always purchasing players that are “bargains” – there is usually a reason for that and we are seeing it with RLC.

He’s not a DM – despite his size – and he’s not a CAM either. We have a team of mix-matched players.

      Great job Georgio

  5. Play him as a box to box midfielder and his a different player. He can score goals.

Play him as a defensive player and he’s not that good.

    1. He was the same and maybe even worse in a more attacking position too. He is just invisible. Scored some goals which arguably would have been scored by anyone in the same position. In defence at least he can use his physicality sometimes. But in general he is not a good enough for Milan.

    2. Exactly! Loftus is a box to box, these kind of midfielders are used in a three man midfield. In the beginning of last season we played 433, and he was very good with tijani and had krunic as DM. I don’t know why coaches now a days stick to one particular formations according to the kinds of players you have. Anceloti era , I remember how he used different formations. Even 2007 champions league final, we use a totally different formation and still won!

  6. What has happened to tomori? Had a great start with milan but now seems to have become a very modest, average player – anyone can come up with a good reason?

    1. They all actors with Leao leading them, that hapens. They think they are so good. Milan need young gresh players. Look what we miss with Thuram,we buy some Jovic or Morata they not good 20% like is Thuram

  7. First game, faults here and there. There’s still room to correct all. At least, the coach understands that Serie A and preseason friendlies are two different things. Fofana is here, and we have options in the middle. The coach has to find the best blend, even with the subs. Who would have thought that Musah would come from the bench to make the difference. It’s still a long season. I can’t be too critical of any player just after one game. I can see the fire in a lot of them, so, it’s up to the coach to bring it out, with healthy competition.

  8. Ambrosini talk for me that’s how i see rlc he isn’t good at defensive side or offensive side him bennacer are two useless players

  9. This is my point of it all, firstly I admire the both teams yesterday but I decided not to elaborate on their errors given that the match is just the first and of both sides Torino looked more solid but what happened at the end? A Torino team that I know two goals ahead there is no way you are coming back, this match for both Milan and Torino is rusty and with new coaches so please cut Milan some slack

Last season we started on a high pace, winning and looking invincible only to crash at the hands of our bitter rivals Inter Milan, I can only say there is work in progress, and difficult situations like this brings out the best in the team.

And lastly if we are picking errors, I would fault the entire team and respect only to Okafor, firstly Tomori was not that bad yesterday but his pair was and that’s due to is lack of anticipation, his drive sometimes would seem off and when he picks it up, he is way too aggressive, never balanced, as for pulisic he should bury his chances for crying out loud but let’s give him the benefit of doubt.

As for the goal keeper, he kept us in the game, Rafael was instrumental and chuck had too many clashes with Jovic it was like Jovic was confuse with his positioning, as for Morata what a way to open, so swift but he should also ensure to bury his chances please, instead of seeking a penalty.

For Calabria it’s so unfortunate but I know he is a fighter that has seen a lot of RB’s off, I think there is a way he plays the RB that makes him look off, never direct, he needs a RB like Cafu to enlighten him and to the rest of the team weldone and let’s see the true Milan on display in the next match…..forza Milan

  10. Always a goal threat, physically imposing – not sure why so many people get on his back – he’s not the most creative but he’s good at other things instead, great scoring record last year.

  11. Ambrosini you will talk about Loftus 🤣🤣
Man you dont know anything, you have luck at your time. You are not good to comments player like this. What a loser

  12. Unless we play 433 he has no place at Milan.
Even with 433 he is very inconsistent.

People talk about selling Bennacer, thats madness, its RLC who should go and we’d probably get a decent price from epl

    Musah is young
    Bennacer class
    Reijnders exciting
    Fofana important

Reinvest in samardzic, though seems too late now

  13. I am a Milan fan from the the 90s and gave up on football when Ibra and Tiago Silva left Milan only to reignite my passion for the game on Ibras return. It pains me to see Milan with players like RLC, Thiaw, Jovic and Salad in this team. Cant even be considered Mighty anymore. Plus, the lack of italians is part of the problem. Milan should get the youngsters through quicker and also sign more italians. Aah gone are the days of Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Rossi, Nesta, Albertini etc and then players such as Boban, Van Basten, Gullit, Papin, Desailly, Cafu, Savicavic. Milan need someone willing to pump money into the team like Berlusconi did and make us great again not a mediocre team not even considered a threat in Europe. If that means selling to a Middle East fund then why not. The Americans are not interested in making Milan great again

  14. Ridiculous the hate that RLC gets. He’s big, strong , good skills on the ball. He also had a brilliant outside of the boot pass that put Leao in on goal and should have scored. It’s puzzling the criticism he gets here.
