Ambrosini: “Milan will play better against big teams; Giampaolo? I like him”

By Oliver Fisher -

Former AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini has offered his thoughts on this weekend’s Derby della Madonnina against Inter.

The Rossoneri are looking to put an end to Inter’s perfect start to the season, with Antonio Conte’s side have won all three games in Serie A to begin his reign.

Milan have recovered well from their 1-0 defeat to Udinese, beating Brescia and Hellas Verona without conceding to take them level on points with fourth place

Sky Italia – as cited by MilanNews.it – claimed on Thursday that Marco Giampaolo was ready to try and adapt to Davide Calabria’s ban by switching to a three man defence.

The head coach – who arrived from Sampdoria in the summer – has drawn criticism from supporters for seemingly not having a fixed plan.

Despite this, Ambrosini believes he was the right appointment and can help take Milan back to the top, revealing his thoughts in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I like him because he knows football very well. He is a manic worker and his teams have precise ideas,” he said, as per MilanNews.it.

“He must be evaluated in a time frame that cannot be short, it is right to ask for time and I agree when it says that he will carry on in his way.

“His principles must carry them forward, even if in reality he has already had to use some compromises. Moving a player or making certain adjustments that we are seeing, shows that he has already begun to deal with certain dynamics.”

Ambrosini appeared in 25 derbies during his time with Milan, and was asked for his favourite memories.

“The first one [March 1996]. I still have the San Siro glance in my mind, I was a kid, we lost but what a thrill.

“And then of course what brought us to the final of the Champions League.

“The match tomorrow? Very balanced. As for Milan, it’s easier to play well against the big teams, because you have more space.”

On the return of Zvonomir Boban and Paolo Maldini: “His and Boban’s role will be very important with a technician like Giampaolo, because sharing and support are needed.

“Paolo and Zvone have a formidable empathy, they are a beautiful couple. I already saw him as a player. And Massara completes the trio well. But time must be left for everyone.”
