Ambrosini questions Milan’s centre-back strategy: “Why not sign Leoni?”

Massimo Ambrosini believes that AC Milan made a big mistake by not going for Giovanni Leoni after selling Malick Thiaw to Newcastle.

Thiaw’s sale to Newcastle was made official earlier in the summer, and Milan will get around €40m from the departure of the German as per reliable reports. Instead of going for a starter-level signing for a similar price tag, they chose to go for Koni De Winter, who arrived from Genoa for €20m.

De Winter is still yet to play for Milan under Massimiliano Allegri while the three remaining central defenders – Strahinja Pavlovic, Matteo Gabbia and Fikayo Tomori – remain under starters’ orders. The late addition of David Odogu has left some to question the strategy.

‘For the fans’

Ambrosini spoke on the Cronache di Spogliatoio YouTube channel and he revealed his bafflement regarding why Milan did not seem to even try for Leoni, with his comments via MilanPress.

“Milan sell Thiaw for €42m, but why not sign Leoni? Liverpool paid €35 m for him, but it’s still more of a gamble, because you paid €10m for Odogu [same age]. But you’re also making a splash for the atmosphere, for the fans,” he said.

“He’s a young, Italian lad, who’s done well anyway. In football, people talk about him. Andrea Pirlo told me on the second day of training that the lad was strong, and several other people later confirmed his qualities.”

    1. Your logic would be buy Leoni for 40m and then he fails miserably and lose him for half the amount, this is why you are poor your whole life

      1. I’m sure you know nothing about wealth creation. There’s a reason why the team had decided to invest in defense yet all the players they sign are still second to the defenders on ground. Does that even make any sense to you?

        1. Don’t bother, he’s just a bitter little nance who’s fuming in his misery and depression on this blog. He never comments on any of the matches, all he does is prey on other folks comments and be miserable about it.

      2. There he is!!! @Boulden!!! The a$$ sniffing, Gerry worshiping donkey who still lives in his moms basement!! Hahahahahaha!! How u been donkey???

Go back to bed. That paper route starts bright and early and ppl don’t like their morning papers late!

    1. When you make that statement please do not forget New York Yankees are American Run Business Team, Liverpool are American Run Business Team, now many in Serie A are American Run Business Teams…. So what is your logic here Bud? BTW I am not American but I also know a thing or two on running businesses

  1. Because he wanted to go to England and Liverpool were already on him. That’s why. We should have been able to find an experienced defender in several months in the window but I understand Leoni wasn’t likely.

  2. It’s a shame, we’ll be regretting this. The RedBird lovers will tell you he’s not good because he’s Italian as he signs for the PL champions…

  3. I’d testify in court that the signing of Odogwu fir 10mill was money laundering, or a secret payment to Schalke 04 for selling Malik to Newcastle. However it is, splashing for a reserve player cannot be defended.

  4. The answer to each days question is simple
It is a club run by IDIOTS.

This is the worst squad of even the redturd era. 10th place here we go

  5. Even if we paid 100M to Parma, Leoni would have wanted Liverpool. He wanted to go play with his idol Van Dijk, not with fodder like Tomori, Gabbia and Pavlovic. It’s not even a contest.

      1. but it seems like you are a prophet and you know that Leoni is a 100m player

use your powers for something more useful

    1. If Leoni had his heart set on Liverpool then unlikely Milan going to change it but it does raise a point about who now represents our club. If Maldini was still there he has so much respect that if you’re a defender, and Italian and he calls you asking to join up, it might be the edge needed to sign. After all we only got Theo because of this. Now, unfortunately we have a bunch of suits trying to lure players in to a club that can’t offer any European football, never mind Champions league, and will probably finish top 6 in league.

  6. AMERICAN CORPORATION DOESNT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE JUST PROFIT!! We need to get relegated so they sell the club.

  7. It’s so simple the owner dont want Italians in that team, signing of ricci,is because fans want him,
Allergri was because the 2 Portuguese coachs failed and that’s why
If we have haired Italian sporting director ,
He is going to assemble this names in our team today
    Calafioli
    Leoni
    Parisi
    Nuno travrez
    Lucca
    Kean
    Rovella
    Ricci
    Chiesa
    Fazzini
    Comuso
    Capola
    Orsorini
Add this guy in our team right now will surely compete for league

    1. Philip, Tare is Italian my friend. Yes he was born in Albania, and yes he grew up there but his entire life he lived in Italy, anything he knows comes from Italy, he is married to Italian, has Italian Passport, pays taxes in Italy…. What is Italian for you? BTW I only know couple of Italian Sportong Director that can match Tare when you compare his KPI’s and performance. In my books, he came in weeks before the end of the season and did very well in transfer window…. Basically cleaned house, and started rebuilding. We kept all the good players and got solid prospects in, with Modric to give tha little winning mentality which we do not have in our team since Ibra stopped playing. NOW it is down to the Italian (by your standard) to get the best out of the players and some results. This year qualifying for Champions League is a realistic target. Tare is now working on January window… or perhaps he should be do Allegrinos work?

  8. People in the comments think a 18 year would start at Milan. Crazy! You guys think he would start? So what if I told you he would be for months if not a year in the bench 35m player on the bench would you guys be happy? Or Comuzzo 30m player on the bench would you be happy?
Kean is good idea but maybe next year bc I don’t think they have enough money.
    Parisi isn’t good idea anymore.
Rovella yes good idea but expensive one and I think Juve finally use him idk but if we could yh
Fazzini no he’s not good enough
Coppola no bc this management is scared the competition from PL
Orsolini yh if he wants to be a rotation player
    Chiesa wants to stay
Lucca again they scared of competition
Nuno Tavares isn’t Italian! Wtf not good enough
    Calafiori too expensive.
So these players could be good idea to sign : (down below).
    Udogie
    Kean
    Rovella
    Miretti
    Orsolini
    Liberali
    Camarda
    Desplanche
    Kayode
    Andrea Natali
    Koleosho
    Gnonto
    Pisilli
    Prati
    Fabbian
    Pafundi
    Fortini

  9. Feels like they are avoiding Italians on purpose. Probably because of how the fans reacted after the sale of Tonali. Its easier to sell foreigners without making the fans angry i guess. And thats all that this Milan management want, to sell players for profit. With all this transfers i wont be surprise if later some money laundering scheme comes up to lol.

  10. So many comments of hating for the sake of hating… this is pretty si.ple.. Parma went for max profit, Longoria went for max salary, and Liverpool’ budget size made sure there was no other capable of competing for his signing….

  11. Leoni was too much of a gamble and we needed two experienced cbs one that could be a starter and lead the line. But we failed miserably

  12. De Winter + Odogu = Leoni (more or less). I think that’s the point of Ambrosini statement. Just like Gimenez + Nkunku, where you can directly get a profile like Sesko.

Yes, he’s 18. Yes, he might not be directly involved in our starting eleven. But, do we see De Winter anywhere near our starting 11? He’s not even introduced as a substitute. And what make us think Odogu will be any different?
