Romano: ‘Here we go’ – Amorim will join Milan as new head coach on initial 2-year deal

AC Milan will move forward with Ruben Amorim at the helm of the project. A confirmation was expected shortly and it has arrived in recent minutes.

There have been plenty of turns in the hunt for a new Milan manager, but Amorim’s appreciation has been rising amongst the existing management at the club over the course of the past week. So, when it was reported that he was offered a deal on Saturday, it was no shock.

Like with Oliver Glasner, a deal was offered before Gerry Cardinale’s complete acceptance, with reports this morning suggesting that the American’s final approval was required before things could be finalised.

However, that has now arrived.

Amorim given ‘Here We Go’ status

As Fabrizio Romano broke with his classic ‘Here we go’ statement, the Portuguese coach will join the club shortly, with a contract verbally agreed upon. He will join the club initially on a two-year deal until June 2028, but there would be an option to extend until 2029.

Perhaps this will be in the same structure of Massimiliano Allegri’s deal, where the option is triggered after qualification to the Champions League.

Nevertheless, it is a welcomed step forward with some much-needed clarity arriving on the project and the future of the Rossoneri will be guided by Amorim.

        1. And we finished exactly 8th after the season, it’s not about short memory I think continuity and squad control eventually helps in better. Results, it’s just we were playing too high in his tenure hence conceded on counters so with time he surely would’ve tweak a little but under media and theao pressure management crumbled and fired him

            Concecaio was another failure too. That doesn’t mean we’d finish better than 8th under Fons. They’re both garbage. We hired Fons who did nothing noteworthy at Roma and then expect he’d be able to manage this group, some of which has won more than he did. But I only put partial blame on him, the rest of the blame goes to the management team for hiring him in the first place when we were at point to make a step up. Not gamble on a mid coach

    1. Thats the only solution really, but most fans wont do it. Liverpool fans were even gathering money to get rid of their bad owners, while we can’t even boycott the games.

    That doesn’t excite me very much.

    1. He did a good job in clearing out the deadwood. And even the players they brought in are all good (not 100% on him, but he did approve them). The problem is he is stuck to his tactics, similar to Allegri. So if they don’t bring him players he needs it will be bad. For example he plays with wingbacks that play almost as old school wingers. Milan doesn’t have players for that (Theo would be ideal player for Amorim). So they really have to sign more than a few players for his tactics to work.

      1. He did do a good job of that but it’s what that looks like for us that will be key. He raised 70m and spent 300m – that’s not happening here.

        He’s here now and I’m fully behind him, but I can see a world where this doesn’t go to anyones plan.

  14. Does not fill me with any confidence if anything it fills me with dread. Genuinely worried we will be experiencing a season just like Fiorentina did this past season.

    Can someone explain why he was successful in Sporting? Can this translate to Serie A? I just can’t imagine his system will work with a league that all the teams sit back and we essentially won’t be able to score… and he’s an arrogant man who won’t change tactics.

    I don’t see him in charge after 15 games.. I see our record -> 2 wins, 5 draws, 8 losses before he is sacked

    1. You cannot compare Portugal to a top league. How many great coaches have Portugal produced in the last 50 years? One. Mourinho was the exception, not the rule. He was a fluke. The other coaches who went on to manage more high profile teams tanked. Carlos Queiroz? Tanked at Real Madrid. AVB? Tankled at Chlesea. Marco Silva? Tanked at Everton. Portuguese coaches aren’t renowned for playing good football either.

    2. Portuguese league should really have like 10 teams. After 8th place, teams can’t even win 10 games. There were teams relegated with 10 wins in Serie A before.

I have not watched enough of Amorim’s teams to have a big say or opinion on him but i asked a friend of mine who is a die hard Man Utd fan and while he acknowledges Carrick of course for bringing a sort of belonging and spirit to United, he says the team is based on the tactical principles of Amorim and that he has 80% of the credit for the recent resurgence.

    Additionally, he meant you will need to give him some time, especially seeing as it will be a post-WC season with long holidays or late transfers that will make his work difficult and limited from a time perspective.

    Should he get the signings he needs/wants, I feel he deserves at least our initial support and should not get the hate related to Cardinale, Ibra or the previous season in general.

  16. Experiments never stop. Another season ruined. We will be looking for a new coach after the first 7 games next season. Amorim failed big time with tones of money at MU.

    I assume he’ll keep his 3-4-3, so looks like those two CM spots will be absolutely critical in screening the back 3. We really have to keep hold of Pavlovic and Pulisic for this to work.

  23. Don’t write off Amorim so quickly. This is his chance to regain the respect and reputation he had when he was at Sporting, that side of his was awesome and all the top teams wanted him.
    Let’s see what he can do , he needs to be given time and they need to acquire the players he requires.
    To be honest Kroesche from Eintracht looks like a solid addition, so maybe Cardinale will have finally got it right with these acquisitions.

    1. Amorim actually cleaned ManU of dead weight, all his new signings were perfect. He did not manage to get the tactics and player management right, however I hope that he learned the lessons.

      I would agree, give him a chance, he is a good manager, and I think he will do well with us, providing we allow him to make player changes he wants. This means he can tap into Portuguese young talent.

  24. This is still not official. So far it’s still rumors. If Milan appoints Krosche I don’t see him getting along with Amorim who clearly stated at Manchester United that he wants more power to decide on the transfer market like managers in the EPL

    Krösche stated he wants ultimate power to choose the sport director and coach. So something is off here.

      1. I’m really trying to understand this move, it makes no sense. He was absolutely terrible at United, and the minute they fired him the team looked ten times better.   25. To be honest, my hope for this year’s coach is not high; Glasner, Amorim, Jaissle, seems like all fall into the same pool. Potential – less experienced pool.

    The question is that can we really build our team around Amorim? He might need several players to suit his style. The last thing we need is another short solutioned coach. Coach changes, transfer market strategy changes, it’ll be endless cycle.

    As always, I’ll leave my judgement by the end of the season, hopefully.

    1. Left a coach that prove he can win something with a mid table club and play exciting football with average quality players but went for a coach that wins nothing a a big club and couldn’t play good football with the quality of players he has to manage a big and complex club like Milan..
