Amorim urges fans to shift focus from starting eleven: “Needed in the second half”

Ruben Amorim has urged the AC Milan fans and the media to shift focus from the starting eleven, instead acknowledging the power of substitutions.

One of the main talking points week in and week out since Amorim joined has been the starting eleven. The manager has often made changes between games, while starting some players who perhaps aren’t the most popular ones.

On the flip side, his substitutions have also been talked about, especially since they have often changed the course of the game. The Lazio clash is one example, with Diego Moreira’s entrance, and the Venezia clash is another.

Substitutions are crucial

Given the above, in his interview with Sky Italia Insider, Amorim made it clear that people should focus less on the starting eleven. Instead, he wants them to also acknowledge the power of having strength on the bench.

“I always try to field the best lineup for each match, also taking into account what might be needed in the second half. Looking at these first five games, it’s already clear that all the players who came off the bench have had a positive impact.

“We can’t just focus on the starting eleven. And with two days between games, it’s impossible to always rely on the same players: we all have to be ready, and we work on that every day,” he stated.

  1. I think he meant to say- “I always try to field the most illogical lineup for each match, also taking into account who needs to come on and save the game in the second half…”

  2. Starting your best lineup makes more sense because you won’t have to chase the game. If you have to think about the second half before playing the first half then your team is not good enough and you need stronger better players for the starting lineup and the bench.

I agree that we should have players on the bench good enough to come in a change the game if needed but it shouldn’t be at the expense of starting a weaker team in the first half. Smh

  3. “… it’s already clear that all the players who came off the bench have had a positive impact.”

Here’s a crazy thought – what if these same player show positive impact from the start?

  4. the fact that everyone agree that amorim need to start a fixed starting line up each and every match tell us that this team lacks fundamentally a good players. everyone got a scare everytime amorim choose a starting line up that ambiguous or sus. they just want safety from starting with players that known to play well, in their natural position. what happen if those safe pick failed to get result then with no trustworthy player on the bench left, with nobody to change the game from the bench.
it’s a dream to have a good squad with depth. a squad where whoever picked in those starting line up nobody will question the reason why.
