The entire defense needs to be sold. They’re so unreliable that the rest of the team plays nervous because theyre scared to lose the ball.
To be fair, they’re being asked to play completely differently from season to season and in roles with completely different skill sets. Last year, the role was to be compact, deep and rely on the centre pivot to move the ball. This year and under Fonseca the complete opposite; play with ball at feet, don’t release it under any circumstances, play through the wingback to get it into CM…
We don’t have a set of defenders built around a style or identity because we don’t have one and we don’t have any long-term vision of what it should be. Are we willing to accept two years of mid table finishes to install a style? Fat chance they’d get away with that, so no doubt the hunt for quick fixes will continue and result in just piling up players of completely different styles.
Amorim prefers his CBs to play through the middle and not the wingback, I agree though.
