ANSA: Gimenez’s Mexico out of Copa America – how Milan can move forward

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan have held an interest in Santiago Gimenez for months, and following his, and Mexico’s, elimination from Copa America, there is now a decision to be made about his future.

With the Joshua Zirkzee debacle set to be solved within the next 48 hours, or at least a decision will be made by then, this is where Milan must make decisions on other strikers.

To lay out the scene, by this time on Wednesday, the Rossoneri should know their plans for Zirkzee: they will either continue to pursue him, and likely pay an agent commission, given that is the stalling point, or they will move onto other targets.

Therefore, if by Wednesday, Milan know they will not go for Zirkzee, it is imagined they will go for Romelu Lukaku, Tammy Abraham (maybe both), or Santiago Gimenez, and a report from earlier today suggested the Mexican striker is the preference.

Following their elimination from the Copa America, ANSA (via Milan News) wrote that the Mexican had very little impact on the game, and the same can be said for his tournament in general, which could be a cause for concern for the Diavolo, given there were fears about his international form.

Alternatively, it could be seen as a positive. With nothing scheduled for the rest of the summer, there is an open road, and no distractions, so if the plan following the Zirkzee decision is to pursue Gimenez, they have to take their opportunity.

      1. Colombo has waaaay more goals in Serie A than Gimenez. Scoring in Dutch league doesn’t mean they’ll continue scoring in Italy. Remember Huntelaar? Insane amounts in Ajax and in Italy? Naaah, not even good enough for the bench.

  1. It’s gonna be quite weird if USA and Mexico got grouped while Canada is going to be the sole rep for CONCACAF for the Copa America.

    1. Not wierd at all. Canada finished first in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying in 2022, Mexico second, and USMNT third.
USMNT got out of group at Qatar only because, well. Gregg Berhalter matched up against his English alter ego, Southgate in a 0-0 draw, also tied Wales and then beat that world powerhouse Iran 1-0.
First real team the USMNT met – Netherlands, they get killed 3-1.
This is a train wreck long time USMNT fans have seen coming from years and miles/kilometers away.
Gregg Berhalter’s lifetime record against Panama is now 5 wins and 3 losses, and if you take away his first 3 wins against Panama, his record is 2-3, a losing record.
What’s become apparent is that Gregg’s tactics have become so predictable that teams like Panama have figured out how to beat him easily, even though Gregg has the most talented squad of US players EVER. Gregg clearly has also lost any motivational touch with the team, he has zero ability to coach defense, and zero ability to adjust to tactical surprises like a red card.
So, not a surprise at all.
And, as an American I’ll be happy to see Jesse Marsch go through with Canada while Gregg falls flat on his face and gets fired.
Jesse had made clear that USSF had screwed him over, that he thought they were going to offer him the USMNT job, and then instead re-hired Gregg.
So yeah, I want to see Gregg lose his job, and Matt Crocker too, the US men’s Sporting Director needs to be fired. They are all CERTIFIED LOSERS.

  2. Gimenez has never impressed at the international level
Some of that could be because the Mexico NT has completely gone downhill, but, the Eredivisie is known to be weak defensively and I think it would be a terrible mistake for Milan to get him
