ANSA: Serie A expected to implement play-off game for title and relegation standoffs

There could be some significant changes made to Serie A ahead of what should be an exciting 2022/23 season. In fact, an interesting proposal was voted through by the Lega council earlier today.

As reported by ANSA (via MilanNews), there will most likely be a play-off game for title and relegation battles. If two teams finish on the same amount of points, head-to-head record and goal difference are two of the current separators.

However, with the new rules, there will be a play-off game if two teams finish with the same amount of points. This will only apply to battles that are for the title or relegation, meaning the old rule will remain in force if two teams are fighting for Europan qualification, for example.

This proposal, as mentioned, was voted through by the Lega Council and the same outcome is expected in the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) council. In other words, a significant change to Serie A is in the pipeline.
