CM: Arsenal ‘tried seriously’ to re-sign Milan star before turning to Chelsea man

By Oliver Fisher -

Arsenal made a concrete attempt to bring Ismael Bennacer back to the club but in the end were forced to turn to an alternative target, a report claims.

There were rumours towards the end of last year from various sources suggesting that Arsenal were exploring the idea of bringing Bennacer back to north London, with the Algeria international having spent two years there as part of the youth sector from 2015 to 2017.

Calciomercato.com report that Bennacer is very attached to the Rossoneri – whom he joined from Empoli in the summer of 2019 – and the confirmation of this came on 12 January with the renewal of his contract until 2027.

Arsenal ‘tried seriously’ to bring him back as Mikel Arteta had specifically asked for a midfielder with his precise characteristics. However, the Gunners then seized the opportunity to land Jorginho who was allowed to leave Chelsea given Bennacer decided to continue his experience at Milan.

  1. Who makes these things up? So Arteta wanted Bennacer’s characteristics but ended up with Jorghino a completely different player
