GdS: Atalanta and Inter claim more than Milan and Juventus in Champions League

With the first stage of the Champions League coming to an end, the purses of each of the Serie A teams have been calculated and AC Milan are lagging behind.

The Champions League is the biggest chance of financial gain for Italian teams, and Milan have performed magnificently recently to maximise profits after a difficult opening two games. With their place in the Round of 16 reliant on a positive performance in Croatia, let’s take a look at the finances earned so far.

Starting with Croatia, reports have suggested that a win against Zagreb could earn the Rossoneri almost €25 million, which would be a substantial aid in the battle for Santiago Gimenez. Though, of course, not all of the funds would go to the transfer kitty.

Qualification via the top eight would see the total purse earned so far sit at €73m, as Gazzetta dello Sport reveals. This is made up of ~€18m for the market pool, €4.5m for ranking, €10.5m for results and then €18.6m, which is the fixed participation share.

This figure of €73m stands at less than Inter (€85m) and Atalanta (€77m), due to their market pool and ranking intakes. However, the Rossoneri have pocketed more than €12m more than Juventus, but if the Bianconeri qualify for the round of 16, their total would be €76m, €3m more than the Diavolo.

Bologna rank last with €30m, which could rise a little, but not by much.

  1. Can someone explain “Ranking Intakes”? If it is based on the entire season, than the relative differences to Inter and Atalanta make sense. If it is based just on this Champions League season, it feels like Milan is being punished for having played Liverpool and Leverkusen up front. The disparity is quite large with Inter, who are higher placed. But Atalanta?

    1. I think they referr to the overall club coeffficients rankings where Inter is 8th, Atalanta 18th, Milan 20th and Juventus 21st, when they say ranking intakes.

      Fun fact: Roma is 6th

Atalanta getting 4 mil more for being 2 spots above Milan in the rankings plus having collected 1 point less so far sorta make sense if you account for getting a bit more from the marker pool as defending EL winners (since im pretty sure Milan have a bigger “market” as a club)?

Inter is also much higher up in the rankings (12 spots) + have collected 1 point more this year which explains why they made 12 million more so far.

The Juventus purse makes least sense. They are behind Milan in the rankings and have 3 points less so far this season in CL, so it seems more odd they would get 3 mil more. Larger market pool?
