Athletic: Man Utd turned to €55m deal amid Milan’s €100m demands for star – the background

By Euan Burns -

Manchester United opted to sign Andre Onana from Inter after they were quoted a price of €100 million to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan, a report claims.

As has been reported by The Athletic, the Premier League sign were not always convinced that Onana was the goalkeeper that they wanted.

Onana signed for Man United recently in a deal that is worth €55m, with Inter gladly accepting that fee given he arrived on a free transfer one year earlier.

The report claims that before making the move for Onana, Man United representatives met with Milan ahead of the Champions League semi-final between the two Milan teams.

They wanted to find out about the availability of Maignan. That interest remained in place until Milan sold Sandro Tonali to Newcastle for €70m.

Having sold one key player, Milan demanded €100m for Maignan and it was a no-brainer for United to pursue Onana instead for almost half of that price.

  1. Not enough. I’m sure if someone came with 80 they’d take it. It’s still a lot of money tho. But I’d slap at least 180 on him.

    1. 80 mill is a fair price but probably they know they’d get 80 million if they put him on sale for that price (Chelsea and PSG would probably bid, and maybe other Premier League teams ). 100 million is a good price to find out who really wants Maignan, like Newcastle with Tonali.
I’d assume that he’ll get sold next year if we don’t get a renewal this year which I find unlikely (I think he’d want at least 6 million, unless we really click as a team)

Let’s not kid ourselves, Onana is a good goalkeeper but he hasn’t won anything big outside of the league in Netherlands. He’s also gone for a couple months during the African cups, so you need a really good second GK otherwise you might be screwed (like we were with Tatarasanu last year when Maignan got injured). Also he’s regarded as a bit of a hot-headed player, and let’s not forget that was caught using illicit substances in Netherlands and suspended for almost a year.

Also visibility-wise, the national French team GK that competes to win the world cup is different from the Cameroon national team GK. You might be the best player in the world but if you play for Empoli or Spezia you’re not gonna be sold for 50+ million

Point I’m trying to make is that 53 mill for Onana was a really good price, but I don’t think that 100 mill for Maignan is more expensive if you compare the players and what they offer.

    1. Based on the comments here I had thought Marotta was the perfect director and only Milan had amateurs on board. 😀 😀 😀

  2. What is it about the price that you guys will not appreciate your club now.. That is the reason Glazers family can not buy good players for us, I don’t know why you guys cannot join mouth together say to them that money speak in football right now… OK?

    1. No but He joined on free, will miss 1 month for African cup,had a drug ban before joining inter and France is more known than Cameroon. All these factors made the difference in price. I would say mike is better but not by much

      1. If we can focus on what each of them offer, then the better. Talking about where the come from sounds funny in this era.
