Di Marzio: The background on Milan’s interest in Enzo Fernandez amid Liverpool interest

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are one of the clubs that Enzo Fernandez was offered to by intermediaries last summer, a report claims.

As has been reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, the 21-year-old Benfica star is the target of almost every big club in Europe, with Premier League side Liverpool looking like the favourites to strike a deal with the Argentine’s entourage.

He joined Benfica from River Plate but in the summer, Milan were offered the chance to make a move for him and whilst there was a lot of admiration, the Rossoneri opted not to make a move for him.

They chose to direct their efforts toward assigning Charles De Ketelaere and Aster Vranckx for the midfield instead.

Fernandez is now a World Cup winner, but his valuation last summer was €12 million and €8 million in bonuses. He is now thought to be worth more than five times that, meaning Milan may feel a sense of missed opportunity.

  1. “Milan may feel a sense of missed opportunity.”

If I recall, at that time, we still wanted to sign R.Sanches despite the fact that he didn’t want to come (and made it very clear).

The positive thing is that R.Sanches finally didn’t come.

A feeling of missed opportunity? I would have phrased it a bit differently and said we completely fucked up.

    1. All the right ingredients were there to make Sanches a Milan player. Remember when he visited Milanello? All things changed when PSG signed a new director and Galtier; who both have a good rapport with Sanches.

Not saying Milan did all the right thing here. But we see (for several times now) Milan keeps waiting and waiting just to got screwed by the player / agent in the end. While on the other hand missing several other opportunities in the market. And that, we should really learn from and work on.

  3. Milan has one of the best talent evaluators and scouts in Europe in Moncada. But what good does that do if Maldini and Co disregard his input?
It was reported over the summer that Moncada wanted Milan to go after Enzo, but Paolo had his mind stuck on Renato Sanches. After Enzo signed for Benfica and Renato Sanches chose the 6 mil from PSG to sit on the bench, Milan then turned to CDK, who cost them an arm and a leg .
Vranckx was last minute signing who BTW, if redeemed, will cost as much as Enzo. But Vranckx hasn’t played 20 minutes combined thru 4 months as a Milan player , while Enzo was ready made player, and already kicking ass in Portuguese league, Champions league and just won the World Cup and young player of the tournament award.
“Paolo, you got some ‘splaining to do”

    1. Maldini turned to CdK because he still had the unused budget from Botman. Buy option for Vranckx is 10 mil, while Enzo 20 mil (the 8 mil bonus should be several easy achievable clauses).

      1. What’s your point?
Vranckx option is at 12, on top of the 2 million Milan paid for his loan.
Even if Enzo costs 20 at the end, including the bonuses, he is already a star and worth it, while Vranckx has played, up to this point, 20 more minutes than me for Milan

        1. Price difference and buy option are the point. With (strictly) limited transfer, loan with buy option is a low risk and preferable operation.

He’s already a star? Back in the previous TW, nope. Just another promising talent. That’s just the nature of players and market. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

          1. Enzo came from River Plate, one of the biggest clubs in South America .
Vranckx came from Wolfsburg, where he wasn’t even in the coaches plans for this year.
Milan had the 10 mil to spend on Enzo but instead Maldini wanted to give up to 15 mil to Lille for Renato Sanches.
They wanted Renato to play the n10 role so after he rejected them they turned their attention to CDK.
And CDK wasn’t a low risk operation. He cost 35 million. So he wasn’t a risk at 35, but Enzo at 10 was?
