The former AC Milan vice-chairperson and CEO Barbara Berlusconi has weighed in on the stadium saga, calling it ‘humiliating’ for the city of Milano.
Barbara Berlusconi – the daughter of the late Milan owner Silvio – was always in favour of building a new stadium. She and the club unveiled plans to build a 48,000-capacity home in time for the 2018-19 campaign all the way back in July 2015, but it never materialised.
She and the current Mayor, Beppe Sala, have previously clashed over the notion that Milan intend to build their new home in San Donato, which in turn promoted the City Council to launch their own project to try convince the clubs to stay.
Sala announced the news today that Milan and Inter have rejected WeBuild’s San Siro renovation plan and Barbara Berlusconi released some words to ANSA highlighting how much of a farce the issue has become.
“The issue of the stadium is humiliating for a city like Milan. A symbol of modernity and innovation that has always been ahead of its time,” she said (via La Gazzetta dello Sport).
“An Italian comedy made specifically to decide nothing. Months have been wasted to note the obvious, that is, the fact that San Siro cannot be renovated because the potential costs are unsustainable and very far from the figure presented.
“We have returned to the 2019 proposal. It is disheartening to note that, like in the game of the goose, we are back to square one.”
