Barcelona president names Milan among clubs who ‘could accept’ Super League

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has suggested that there is a planned relaunch of the European Super League project, while he claimed that AC Milan are among the interested clubs.

It was back in 2021 that 12 of Europe’s top clubs had launched the creation of a new ‘Super League’ which would be governed by the teams themselves.

The plan was that it would replace their participation in the Champions League, and whule it was met by the threat of severe sanctions from UEFA, the idea of a relaunch has been constantly mentioned.

A22 Sports – the company who are behind the potential relaunch – explained their proposed format during an official pitch in December.

Laporta spoke in an interview with RAC1 about the possibility of a Super League reboot and he even named the teams that would participate, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

“The Super League could already exist from next season, or from the 2025-26 season. Whether the English come or not, I don’t care,” he began.

“A proposal is made to a club in which just by participating, you tell them that they will earn 100 million, which you don’t even earn by winning the Champions League.

“Which clubs could accept already now? Barcelona, Madrid, Inter, Milan, Napoli, Roma, Marseille, three Dutch teams, Brugge and Anderlecht. That’s 16 or 18 teams… It would be better with 16 And other clubs could join later.”

Juventus’ absence was confirmed. After being among the founding member clubs, Juve decided to leave also by virtue of their newfound relationship with UEFA and a desire to protect it.
