Bennacer reveals he had to apologise after asking for shirt number upon arrival at Milan

AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer has revealed a funny anecdote regarding his arrival at the club and the shirt number he asked for.

Bennacer joined Milan back in the summer of 2019 from Empoli and he has become one of the symbols of the resurgence in the last few years, one which culminated in last season’s Scudetto win ending an 11-year drought.

The Algerian has become one of the best midfielders in the league during a process which has seen the Rossoneri climb from salvaging a Europa League spot to being in the Champions League knockout stages.

Bennacer spoke to UEFA in view of tomorrow night’s Champions League last 16 second leg against Spurs and he recalled the time when he joined from Empoli and in particular which shirt number he wanted, with his comments relayed MilanNews.

“Nobody has to say anything to explain to you that this is a special club. I didn’t know much about club legends like Franco Baresi, so when I signed for Milan I asked to wear the number 6 shirt and was told ‘It’s not possible, that shirt has been retired’,” he began.

“I apologised and said I had no idea, but you really feel like you’re in one of the biggest clubs in the world, a club with an amazing history. You feel everything and that’s why I fell in love with this club.

“It means a lot to me, that’s why I decided to extend my contract and continue my journey here, with Milan. There are so many little things that remind you how unique this club is, you definitely feel part of this story.”
