The midfield pairing of Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer were reunited again from minute one of the game against Atalanta last night, but they appeared in visibly different condition.
With Rade Krunic out due to injury and both Tommaso Pobega and Tiémoué Bakayoko behind in the hierarchies, Tonali-Bennacer were fielded against La Dea. However, as MilanNews writes, they seemed to be in ‘two completely different gears’.
The Algeria international was dominant in the middle of the park, even getting himself a goal with smart positioning and a fierce shot, while the handbrake was on for Tonali who generally appeared a bit behind the pace after his recovery from injury and got a yellow card on 75 minutes.
The difference in condition between the two was quite clear and evident. Pioli told us on July 4th that this would be an important year for Bennacer and of course Tonali’s levels will only improve, but the lack of an alternative to bring on did hamper things.
It is clear to everyone that the loss of Franck Kessie has not yet been resolved by Milan, and the Rossoneri management in the last few days of the transfer market will have to work hard to give Pioli the missing piece in the middle of the field.
