Alex Jimenez appears to be one step away from leaving AC Milan, with Bournemouth leading the race as we speak. However, how does Real Madrid’s buy-back clause affect the deal?
When Milan signed Jimenez permanently from Real Madrid in 2024, following a season-long loan, they paid €5m. In the deal, the parties agreed to include a buy-back clause in favour of the Bernabeu side, worth €9m this summer and 12m next summer.

Naturally, this buy-back clause has been brought up as Milan are in talks with Bournemouth over a €25m move for the right-back. Will Real Madrid be able to bring the move to a halt? Luca Bianchin of Gazzetta dello Sport has explained the situation.
How the clause works
Essentially, Real Madrid now have the option to match any offer that comes in for Jimenez, like a classic right of first refusal. However, with Milan asking for €25m to sell the full-back to Bournemouth, it’s unlikely that the Spanish side will do so.
But what about the aforementioned €9m clause? Albeit not specifically stated in the report, it’s clear from context that the buy-back clause has very specific deadlines. Most likely, it has to be triggered before a certain date in July, or even before June is up.
That is also why Real Madrid ‘only’ have a right of first refusal as things stand. If the move to Bournemouth materialises, it should also be noted that the €12m buy-back set for next summer would be considered null and void.
That is why selling him now for 20+M€ makes way more sense than keeping him until next season. Good luck Jimenez!

Ok, but selling Jimenez is the only correct choice in this case.
Agreed, he is a great player, but also very short tempered and is a matter of time to repeat Theo’s CL game (or the other 3-4 every season). I’m happy if he stays, but also see the buyback clause and his character causing potentially more trouble. Good luck to him whatever the future holds and hopefully he matures enough to not be used by his opponents.

I would absolutely keep Jimenez, but this constant talk about Bartesaghi even though we have seen nothing to suggest that he can actually play.
How many different coaches Milan had these last 2 years and none of them was using Bartesaghi. If he was that good at least one of Pioli, Fonseca, Conceição and now Allegri would have used him. But apparently fans that never seen him play more than a couple minutes know more than the coaches who see him every day.

There’s no way they should have agreed to a deal where they can buy for 9M one summer and 12M the next, but in-between get zero compensation for Milan selling at a higher amount before the second part of that clause is even valid.
They have the right to match any offer. What more do they want? They sold the player. He wasn’t on loan at Milan.

I said last year, Milan should sell Jimenez. What is the point of growing a talent who can be bought back by RM for pennies next summer.
