Zvonimir Boban has spoken out on the sacking of his friend Paolo Maldini by AC Milan, and about some of the signings he wanted to make while at the club.
Boban is someone that has never been afraid to speak his mind, as shown when he was sacked by Milan at the beginning of March 2020 after criticising the ownership in an interview. A legal battle then ensued, but the former midfielder never backed down from his stance that he did the right thing.
The Croatian labelled the ownership ‘disrespectful’ and ‘inelegant’ as relations soured. He was fired shortly thereafter for just cause, but recently has been commenting more and more on matters at Milan, especially given his role as a pundit for Sky.
Boban spoke on the YouTube channel ‘Milan Hello’ with Andrea Longoni about some of the most interesting anecdotes from his time at Milan, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
Is there a big difference today between Inter and Milan? And at what level?
“When we look at the results, it’s obvious. When we look at the club, it’s obvious. When we look at the whole thing, what Inter and Milan represent today is obvious. It’s easy to understand, it’s a shame, but on a technical level I don’t think it’s that far away.
“In terms of how to create a team that works well, yes, it’s far away. If Milan make three, four correct additions that rebalance things a bit and give logic to the game, which isn’t there, because it hasn’t been there all year, then we can hope to have a real team.
“Now this isn’t, but Inter is, a competitive team, that always knows what it’s doing, that has a clear identity. We don’t, we don’t have an identity, in fact, there have been 100 identities this season, and in the end none of them was right.
“Because you can’t have a clear identity with these players, how they were bought and make them play. And this, you want many of us too, we understood it since the summer. It was understood since the summer and then it was unfortunately demonstrated It is true.”
Let’s take a step back to 2019 when you became a director at Milan. What memories do you have?
“I left FIFA, Paolo called me when Leonardo left. My work at FIFA was pretty much done, it just needed to be administered after we cleaned up the organisation in three years. Paolo wanted to leave, I told him: ‘You are more Milan than the Milan that is here today, you can’t leave’.
“So I left for Milan, Paolo was unsure whether to stay or not, I was happy to return to the club that I love deeply. I wasn’t born a Milan fan, but I became one. This club has something different compared to all the clubs I’ve known and I say this not because I played there, but because it’s true.
“I arrived, I realised that the whole team had to be changed and in fact in six months we changed 13 players. It was clear that we weren’t complete, in fact after the transfer market I said in an interview that children can’t play alone. And in the club they were pretty p*ssed off.
“But I had to say it because it was right like this, they couldn’t grow alone and in fact in January we took Kjaer and Ibrahimovic, two fundamental additions for the whole journey towards the Scudetto. I leave two months later for the reasons that Milan fans know.
“Without those two, especially without Ibrahimovic, nothing would have been created of that Milan that is moving towards the scudetto and also towards an identity. That Pioli, despite many things I didn’t agree with, managed to instil.”

Is there a player from that year that you remember with pride, because you left your mark?
“There was an agreement with Paolo: he had more to say about the defenders. We did it together, we succeeded because there was too much respect between us. Sometimes I liked some defenders, who for Paolo were a disaster.
“Instead on the tactical framework, I who played as a midfielder in all systems, understood certain dynamics better than Paolo. In the end we chose the players together, there was never a player taken without the other not agreeing.
“Maybe the Saelemaekers operation was nice, I did pretty much everything myself: a 6 million operation, then became 8 and someone will have to explain it maybe one day.
“I have to say, not to be inelegant, that I did some very strange things with Furlani in the sense that we had to convince Gordon Singer to leave us at least a little money from the sale of Suso and Piatek.”
When did you notice something is wrong?
“From the beginning. Already with Paolo that time at home when they told me the idea of how it works I said to myself: ‘So we have to fight against our owners for the good of Milan’. And Paolo says to me: ‘More or less’.
“It’s not that I didn’t know before joining that certain cultures or certain non-cultures wouldn’t be a problem for us in our work. I accepted it as a very big challenge, for me it ended soon but I would do it all again because it had to be done.
“Already in August they took away my power of signature without telling me, strangely. To all those who want to know how things went I say, read Paolo Maldini’s interview in ‘La Repubblica’: that is the sacrosanct truth.
“Then there are many ugly details, but let’s not burden people with so many small useless stories and ridiculous nastiness and absurdly placed limits. They had put a certain Endrick there who I don’t know what he understands about football who had to endorse what we did like a technical controller.
“Even if he stayed for a few months I am proud of what we have done. It was demonstrated not with my work, but with Paolo and Ricky who were very good despite the difficulties in creating a great path and then we won the title.
“I had signed a three-year contract and it had to be: the first of cleaning things up, the second of stability and the third of competitiveness. In all the activities in the world it takes three years, imagine in a club like Milan: it’s the minimum.
“But after three months they almost delegitimised us with an ‘ambush’ as Paolo called it. But that’s how it works, the fund works like this: if I buy at 10 tomorrow it must be worth 15, there’s no logic, they are not football people. It’s not meanness, it’s that they don’t understand football.”
In your interview from February 2020 there are three key concepts: ambition, Milanismo and Italianness…
“I spoke about ‘de-Milanisation’, that was the fear. And it was clear that they wanted to make people lose that strength of wanting to belong. Because it is too big an emotion for someone who wants to control things differently. ‘Sempre Milan’: what the f*** does that mean?
“The whole world knows what Milan is, they even put ‘Sempre Milan’ on the bus. Please… Obviously it annoys, it flattens, it almost makes you become a robot. The idea is that, that the fans become customers, the players become assets. And so on, this is their way.”
You were fired for just cause. How did it end?
“In the end, just cause does not exist, it has been demonstrated. In the second degree, the part that Milan had to pay me for reputational reasons was removed, let’s say. But just cause, which is the most important thing for me personally, does not exist. Now we still have to meet to close it in peace.”
Some at Milan – when talking about the signings – tended to attribute certain operations to Moncada to discredit you and Maldini. What was your relationship with Moncada?
“He is an excellent scout, an excellent chief scout. But all the scout offices in the world know the same players. Maybe it happens that one gets to this one or that one, but for Leao he knew the whole world. It was important to understand if Leao could change certain attitudes to play for Milan.
“And Moncada is an excellent scout or chief scout, but after that we chose the players. He introduced them to you and never went into the merits, even elegantly. Because it’s not his, what does he know about what it means to play at San Siro or not?
“I think we have shown that we understand who could and who couldn’t. In the end it’s not that he made a mistake with the purchases, but they are things to denigrate the strength of Paolo’s work, given that he stayed all these years, while I stayed seven months.
“But where that revolution was made where the foundations were laid for what was the team that won the Scudetto.”
Are there any players that you and Maldini wanted to sign and were prevented from doing so?
“Personally, I went to close Dani Olmo. They didn’t want to do it, it was January 2020. It was all agreed, maybe we had to raise a bit, but it was a deal worth €18m plus €2m. The boy wasn’t even asking for too much but then we had to pay something more and in the end I didn’t get any response, so it was clear that it was a no.
“Then we also had Szoboszlai, it was all agreed: 20 million, his clause with Salzburg. There too, it was denied and I said to myself: ‘What the hell is this?’ then I tried to see them and they didn’t want to see us for two months and so I had to do what I did.
“For some it came suddenly, the thing, but instead it wasn’t sudden. But I couldn’t say things publicly every day or push to meet us for a clarification that never came. We agreed that everything we sold would be reinvested: so there were almost 50 million from Suso and Piatek, these two (Olmo and Szoboszlai) would come from those two.

“I wasn’t sure about Olmo at the beginning because he had a rather strange position on the pitch, his ideal was behind the striker but our idea of the game was 4-3-3 but also 4-2-3-1 which we then saw, in that case it was ideal to have him play over there because Calhanoglu couldn’t do it.
“He’s a playmaker and an 8, but not a 10. Because he doesn’t do one-on-ones and he doesn’t have speed. In fact in the end with Brahim Diaz in that position more was done. Szoboszlai was in Innsbruck, Paolo didn’t go because he was afraid they would recognise him. He’s an icon, wherever you go they recognise him. So Ricky and I went with Szoboszlai’s father.
“We had closed the deal, the boy wanted to come immediately: denied. I had to tell him: ‘Look, let’s see about the summer’. He was very disappointed, he wanted to come to Milan immediately.
“He’s not a great player, but an excellent player. Olmo potentially was. Szoboszlai in my head was an 8 and in the long run he can become a great playmaker.”
Maldini was sacked in the end…
“A shameful page, done in a shameful way. Indecent, unacceptable and I could say a thousand other bad things. Above all, inexplicable even for them. For them Paolo represented the last obstacle to do what they wanted. And the Tonali thing had a big impact, Paolo would never have let him go.
“We are looking at a difference of 70 million, I don’t know how much specifically. A lot of money but that should never have come to Milan because Tonali shouldn’t have left Milan. Because the boy is a Milan fan. When we contacted them he told me he would never go to Juventus and Inter.
“Paolo and Ricky signed him at a super price for a player like that. In the first year he was stiffened by his love for Milan, by his respect for the stadium and many asked themselves questions. My dad told me: ‘Look, he’s afraid of playing’.
“It was true, but given his potential he needed a year to get used to it and breathe freely. Before he wasn’t free, he was too much of a Milan fan. Leaving a symbol like this, then after the title, after everything he did and how he did it.”

100 percent honest and harsh truth about the milan owners and how the club is today. Sad for us fans but I still the ❤️🖤
Just sell the club!!! We/the fans will be the customers??? Really???
I love the fact that Boban is just telling it as it was. These cowboys just look at us as something they can earn money with. Nothing else.
Just look at Inter and where they are today, and look at us! Cardinale OUT!!!
Milan are currently run by imcompetent people who have no idea how to win, let alone manage such a prestigious club. Sad
I don’t get the logic with these greedy bankers. M&M build a solid team with peanuts, turn the negative budget around, win the scudetto and semis in CL, and they still get fired.
And now Dani and Dominik are worth around $140 mil.
And this is why we all hate Americans Redbird/Elliott. They were literally fighting against what made this club great and trying to take credit for the scudetto when in fact it was all these two guys fighting against them. Maldini and Boban are probably the best duo in football. If Milan is going to ever get back to the top we need those two guys back at the club and change of ownership away from these American hedgefunds.
Speak for yourself fool. Are you forgetting the period before the Americans took over? Milan hadn’t won a Scudetto in almost 10 years, hadn’t made Champions League in 5 years. In massive debt.
Everyone conveniently forgets that period and pretends like Milan was winning trophies every year before Elliot took over.
The Americans turned this club around, brought it’s first Scudetto in a decade while dragging the club out of debt and making it profitable again and returned the club to Champions League play 4 years in a row until this season, where they still may end up winning 2 trophies. Why don’t you just Thank You and shut up.
The truth is that Silvio f*cked us over by selling us to that broke Chinese
And then Elliott who are a bunch of loansharks have held the club ransom ever since, wh*ring us out like a cheap prostitute
Redbird bit the bait, Investcorp wisely backed off
We can only hope Redbird successfully managess to pay off all the loan get 100% ownership and tell Elliott to f*ck off but I am not holding my breath
I mean everything we knew already hit what a BOMB interview. Wish they were still here. It’s clear they wanted to take Milan to the next level and Elliot wouldn’t allow it. Thanks for everything legends.
Shots fired🍿
Waiting for Gerryboys to dismiss this interview in a manner such as “is it really necessary after all this time” or “this articles are only to stir the pot”.
Well done Bobi.
No one is dumb enough to side with the management/owners here. Boban is 100% spot on on everything here.
Too bad his “revelations” won’t change anything. Not a single thing. The management is still and will still be incompetent.
So everyone who called us negative, ignorant and out of the loop for criticizing Redbird, with the people they have in place, how they handled our markets, you see everything we said coming to light. These owners and the previous ones didn’t understand football. Team building. Sporting cycles and how to navigate the market. The same people who get chastised here were the ones who actually built the foundations of the squad by fighting with incompetent people who are not from this sport or culture.
This couldn’t be any more painfully obvious than now. We told you so. Middle of the table. Average. Talent that isn’t framed, structured and supported so they can be embebed together by a top to bottom organizational passion for this sport, will not succeed. Players feel it when their owners talk about everything like they an investment asset and treated as such. It removes the passion, because going the extra mile will not be compensated by leadership. It is always an uphill battle where you take one step forward to take 6 back. They won’t sacrifice their ability to maximize their chance to make the most out of their short careers financially, or sporting wise when they know ownership will refuse to offer them the best chance to succeed in return. I am Theo, Kessie, Donnaruma, Hakan, Mike etc, I will not compromise, work tirelessly without any backing, to leave food on the table for them to fatten their bellies instead of bringing in required reinforcements to compete. The rooster is coming to lay it’s eggs on the Redbird.
How bitter it is to read these words. True professionals who understand football, replaced by popcorn and cap-selling vendors—but after all, money doesn’t always end up in the right hands. The most striking difference between Maldini and Boban’s Milan and today’s figures is the incredible class that distinguished them both on and off the field, in contrast to today’s graduates with numerous degrees but no real professional depth. Unfortunately, that’s the way things are now. But even before Berlusconi’s era, our beloved club was in despair, and then the dream came true. So even today, we must believe in our rebirth, because I am certain it will come.
Hear hear.
Boban cry baby. Just move on Boban u did nothing special.
Ibrahimovic won that fluke scudetto no one else.
Whose idea was bringing Zlatan back? Oh right, Maldini’s & Boban’s. 🙂
This was only Boban. Imagine how hard was it to convince Gazidis to pay a player of that age. 🤣🤣🤣 Boban should get some award for that
This. And let’s not forget Gazidis had blocked Z’s return already earlier too!
No it wasn’t
Maldini’s and Boban’s idea was Marco Giampaolo
Then they took that garbage Pioli and got hammered 5-0 by Atalanta
Ibra was a desperate cry for help which did a lot more damage in the long run which only now we are trying to undo
Just look at what Conceicao is doing, he is having to deprogram the players from Pioli’s laziness, he had to get them fit
Zlatan wanted Milan. They did not do anything but accept his request.
Real Milan fans will always love Zvone.
He is always direct (almost to a fault) but he is a proud ambassador of Milan DNA and is fiercely protective of it.
Maldini ,Massara & Boban made mistakes but they brought so much more and the Scudetto was built on their work .
Now we have a soulless corporate structure that real fans just don’t recognize anymore.
Suspect that either Jerry rules Hellas they should became a.champuons smh
He is full of $hit is what he is.
He’s not admitting any of his and Maldini’s mistakes.
They only got super lucky with Ibra who saved their sorry a$$e$
Ibra wanted Milan and he and his agent made it happen not Maldini nor Boban.
💯💯💯💯💯 SPOT ON.
Boban speaks pure truth. So sad what our club has become. But then you have owners who see you nothing more than a profit making machine for its investors – this is sadly not surprising.
And nothing will change until Redbird and Elliot leave/sell the club
Olmo, Szobozlai, etc….there are so many more. Oh man What we could have been of these idiots just let Maldini and Masara build and properly supported them financially…..sky was the limit
Maldini got us Origi
Maldini and Boban got us Giampaolo who was a disaster and then Pioli who was another disaster.
And then after that they begged Daddy Ibra to come save them.
Maldini with Leonardo, Maldini stopped Leo from firing Gattuso which was a huge mistake which people don’t want to talk about. Leo wanted to sack Gattuso at one point and hire Conte, but our Capitano stopped him.
Gattuso ruined our season. He ruined Bakayoko, Piatek and Paqueta.
F*ck all of you Maldini d!ckriders.
I love these unhinged Gerryboys. Cry me some more!🤣👏
This was only Boban. Imagine how hard was it to convince Gazidis to pay a player of that age. 🤣🤣🤣 Boban should get some award for that
Right on boban. Honestly, the fact that he went after olmo and szobozlai and they both wanted to join is somewhat new. For relatively cheap too, given their price tag now. Everyone knows these froud bankers that are at the top of our club. I think midget furlani is the biggest snake of them all. Boban says that they had to go directly to singer to get something done since the snake did everything to stop them. In the end M&M boban are gone and furlani stronger than ever in the hierarchy. The results speak for themselves, mediocre season, value of our once star players has dropped significantly and our deficits will not look any better, if not worse. Not to mention majority of the club’s bread and butter, the fans, are revolting. From redbirds bussines perspective, how does any of this makes sense?! I don’t get it.
Szobozlai was rumoured to Milan during Maldini’s time at Milan
Where did Boban say Furlani tried to stop them in this interview?
Take your fu*king meds
Well spoken Boban.
Cardinale and his cult following of Maldini haters can sod off and go blow an exhaust pipe for what I care.
Maldini orphan vattene
Go take a vacation in Ibiza with Paolo, Padre Pioli and take Origi with you
Don’t forget to invite Diletta Leotta
So you wanna troll me, really.
Id much rather knock your teeth out after this comment and the one below.
Tough guy, don’t forget to drink your soylent
Alright rambling boy
Just imagine Maldini, Boban and Sergio our current coach… Hell would have broken loose with their mentality. Sergio painfully will go and Allegri will come as a yes sir man painfully. Seriously waiting for Sergio interview after the season ends
Even though Conseicao has done reasonably lately I’m pretty sure hw would have been gone within a month of when he was hired when he almost started a fight with Calabria.
He should have beaten that rat up
Nobody talks back to the coach, certainly not this fodder that overstayed his welcome
In fact: Conceicao is a legend for managing to expel Calabria out of Milan
Just for that alone he will go down in the history books
You Calabriarats need to leave the Milan fanbase
I hope we crush Bologna in the final and leave that fraud Calamerda in tears
Shut the F up I’ve been a Milan fan for 36 years so probably long before most people frequenting this site has been alive.
Regardless of his deficiencies I can guarantee you that you would experience a legendary beating yourself if you spoke like that to my or other milan fans faces so bugger off asshat.
I don’t give a d@mn about how long you’ve been a Milan fan for, Calabriarat
You are just another fodder lover to be purged
Bet you also loved Borini and Montolivo too
You are not beating up anyone, you fodder loving soyboy
Tough enough a guy to beat up an insecure little troll like you that’s for sure
and then some of them here blame M&M for not being able to extend Gigio and Kessie contract because of silly salary cap and all others limitation put on them. smh.
Hey, it’s this same Maldini article for the 1,000th time. Great work Oliver.
I feel the obligatory Tonali article coming very soon. Get all the crazies foaming at the mouth.
Why doesn’t Boban talk about Tonali’s gambling and what a failure the Origi transfer was I wonder?
They never think about what would’ve happened to the team if they didn’t sell Tonali and bring in those players, (Reijnders being one of them) and then Tonali would’ve been suspended for the season and we would’ve been left with a Midfield of Pobega and Krunic for the entire season and probably gotten relegated. Very selective memories with these people.
Not to mention Maldini was scheming to get the coach who literally just won us the Scudetto fired.
Krunic was another player who way overstayed his welcome thanks to that bald fraud
I don’t think Reijn is all that great and I don’t think he’s WC, but he’s far better than those two for sure
Plus, Reijn really does have a ’’MILAN’’ feel to him, he’s so likeable
And I can say the same thing about Pulisic
Also Santi Gimenez too
It’s funny how Maldini and Boban couldn’t pick players with a Milan feel to them but Redbird could
I mean, Dani Olmo looks like a sc*mbag, what a puncheable face, thank f*ck he didn’t come to Milan I don’t care how good of a player he is I cannot stand his face
Hilarious that Boban is proud of Salafodder signing
Who can forget other cr*p players like Maldini’s pick Samu Castillejo?
You mean like Bakayoko, Dest, Origi, CDK, Vranckx, Ballo-toure, Manduzik, Pellegri, etc..
Bakayoko was fine until Gattuso made him a scapegoat and ruined his career, in fact people forget that he was better than overrated Kessie, I will always regret what Rino did to him
The rest awful, I forgot about Dest holy ****
CDK not a bad player but he was swindled in the negotiations and he paid too much for him + @$$hole Pioli didn’t want him so he sabotaged him like he did with Hauge
Now I don’t think CDK is World Class but he showed a lot more with Atalanta under a good coach like Gasp
Just when I thought this Monday cannot get any better cause of Boban’s interview, I get these two greaseball cucks @K and @capcelotti here losing their sh*t over it.
I love it🤣
Once again the Brilliant Ted can’t dispute anything I said so he just has to resort to stupid, juvenile insults. The sign of someone who has no argument.
Dispute? Results from one management to other speak for themselves🤣
LOL. These two fellows and their other 2 buddies, Z and Fries, would most likely swallow anything Redbird tells them, even if it makes them look like a bunch of neanderthals. Most likely they also believed every lies their president and his terrorist allies spewed
911 what is your emergency.
Hello, someone is trying to choke us with the truth here.
Why is this interview coming out right before a Cup Final?
Shameful from these “Milan fan journalistas”.
🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Ahhh yes, the things we know are right but some people deny.
Enjoyed this tidbit. Boban as usual not holding back.
Lemme don that #10 lotto kit today, iykyk 😁
