Giacomo Bonaventura has opened up about this decision to retire from football, the years spent at AC Milan and how he wants the fans to remember his career.

Bonaventura joined Milan back in the summer of 2014 as a last-minute addition for Filippo Inzaghi’s side. He quickly became a fan favourite for his hard work and, above all, quality in a team that often lacked that component.

He spent six years at the club before leaving in 2020, sadly without a proper farewell from the fans due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Either way, he’s one of the most respected and well-liked players to have worn the red and black shirt in the last ten years.

Speaking to CBS about his decision to retire ahead of this season, the midfielder was also asked about his time at Milan and tomorrow’s derby clash. He made it clear that it’s impossible to predict the game as anything can happen on the day.

Why did you decide to retire? And were you at peace with that decision?

“It’s a decision that came quite naturally, because in the last year I played, I started to not enjoy it as much as I used to. I didn’t have any injuries or physical problems, but just this: I didn’t feel the passion I had before.

“Two or three years ago, I would wake up and couldn’t wait to go to the training ground. I started to feel this sensation less, my contract expired and I said enough.”

What was it like to play for Milan?

“At Milan, it was amazing. Playing at San Siro for six years is a lot of adrenaline and great emotions. Every time you step onto the pitch, you wish the match would never end, even if you lose, because the atmosphere is wonderful. The Milan fans are fantastic, the stadium, everything.”

What is the week of the derby like?

“The days before the match are very stressful: journalists, television, everyone’s talking about it. You feel the pressure. As a player, it’s best to turn everything off: TV, phone. It’s a match that millions of people around the world watch, so you feel the pressure.

“When you step onto the pitch, the stadium is full, the fans are screaming, and I remember my ears after the games: they were ringing all night. The support of the fans is very strong. It’s the best match for a Milan player to play.

How do you think tomorrow’s derby will end?

“I think it will be a balanced match. They are the best teams this year. Usually, at the beginning, they are more tactical matches, they will study each other.

“Then, maybe in the second half, the rhythm of the game will slow down and the quality of the players will be seen more. But it’s always difficult to say, because in the derby anything can happen: they are two great teams with great players .”
